UK-based food producer Bombay Halwa, owned by Lord Gulam Noon,


has launched a range of Halal frozen ready meals aimed mainly at the UK’s Muslim community. The ready meals - saag chicken, chicken tikka masala, kadhai chicken and butter chicken - will all come with a baghara rice as an accompaniment. In addition, the com- pany has launched Royal Paranthas, slices of bread that can be toasted as a side dish to the meals. The range is available through various independent retailers and cash-and- carry stores. Bombay Halwa is in talks


with various supermarkets and retail chains for possible listings in their stores. Talking about the new products, Lord Noon said the time was right for a pre- mium quality Halal food product to be launched in the UK market. He added: “We have been closely surveying and monitoring the market for a few years now and know that the word Halal has become very buoyant in the Muslim community.”


Council gets new powers to fight touts


Tower Hamlets Council has gained new powers to stop restaurants that per- sistently tout for custom from trading, in the latest move in the fight against curry touts. The new powers allow the council to serve restaurants that tout with a closure notice. Further touting within six months will mean the coun- cil can apply to the courts to completely shut the premises down for up to three months.


The council has already served six clo- sure notices on restaurants in the Brick Lane area since the powers were acti- vated in December. Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: “Brick Lane is an excit- ing and vibrant area that is enjoyed by thousands of visitors every week. But curry touts’ persistent and aggressive behaviour causes an obstruction to both visitors and local residents, and can create an unpleasant environment for everyone. It is important that we now take decisive action to stamp out touting in the run up to the Olympics next year, when all eyes will be on Brick Lane as ‘Curry Capital 2012’.” The council’s Licensing Officers and Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers


(THEOs) are already working in close partnership with the police to use these new powers of closure. The Deputy Mayor, council licensing officers and members of the council-funded police Partnership Taskforce have met with restaurateurs to discuss the new powers and how they will be implemented. This is the latest step by the council to improve Brick Lane and the surround- ing area ahead of London 2012. A vol- untary ‘Anti-touting code of practice’ for curry house owners and a scheme to help reduce litter and clutter on the streets were both introduced last year. A Food Hygiene Rating Scheme was also implemented to help people choose where they eat.


Turmeric may reduce stroke damage


Turmeric, used to make curry, not only lowers the chances of getting cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, but may reduce the size of a hemor- rhagic stroke. Research at the Medical College of Georgia in the US is said to show that curcumin, the active ingre- dient in turmeric, reduces the size of brain-damaging blood clots.


Researchers found that curcumin sig- nificantly decreases the size of a blood clot although the precise reasons for

this are as yet unclear. They believe that receiving curcumin intravenously might produce ‘substantial’ benefits for someone having a stroke.


Other research in the US has also shown that turmeric may be beneficial for certain prostate cancer patients, slowing tumour growth. Researchers from the Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia studied prostate cancer cells in the lab and in mice and found that the presence of curcumin along-

side androgen deprivation ther- apy, or ADT, reduced the number of cells, inhibited cell reproduction and improved survival chances.
