OLYMPICS CLASH MAKES LIFE HARD FOR MUSLIM ATHLETES DURING RAMADAN

Olympics clash makes life hard for Muslim athletes during Ramadan

Many Muslim athletes taking part in the 2012 Olympic Games will face another challenge in addition to that presented by their sporting rivals, as the event will take place during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims traditionally fast from dawn till dusk.

This year, Ramadan falls between June 20 and August 18, while the Olympic Games run from July 27 to August 12. This fact will force the more than 3000 Muslim athletes taking part in the Games to make a choice between the customs of Islam calling on them to fast, with a ban even on drinking water, and feeding themselves in such a way that will optimise their performance. It will also make life harder for the many Muslim spectators who will be visiting the country to watch the games.
