Egg shortage hits industry

Caobisco, the association of the choco- late, biscuit and confectionery industries of Europe has said that many suppliers of eggs have not being fulfilling their orders, leading to the closure of production lines and cancelled shifts at factories. It has clained that the situation is so bad that some firms have had to buy eggs from supermarkets in order to keep working.

The EU introduced a ban on battery cages on 1 January. As a result the trade of eggs from poultry farms that have not installed larger cages is no longer permitted.


Chennai Dosa opens new flagship


Manchester’s Stretford Mall shopping centre is the location of the latest ‘flag- ship’ restaurant in the ChennaiDosa chain. Labour MP for Stretford and Urmston, Kate Green, was on hand to cut the ribbon at the official opening of the group’s first outlet in the north west of England.


Ms Green was joined at the ceremony on Friday 2nd March by Stretford councillors, Dolores O’Sullivan, Tom Ross and Steve Adshead and Stretford Mall manager Colin McCrory, to cel- ebrate the arrival of the two-floor, 125 cover restaurant. They were given a tour of the new restaurant and shown by chefs how the thin dosa pancakes are made.


Ms Green said: “This new restaurant is a huge asset to our community and I am genuinely delighted they have chosen Stretford. It’s a lovely venue and the food is absolutely delicious.”


The company opened its first restau- rant in Manor Park, east London, in 2003 and now has seven restaurants in the London area. Restaurants in Reading, Leicester and Birmingham have followed and, keen to expand into the Manchester area, the Stretford Mall was chosen as an ideal location. Further plans include opening up fur- ther new restaurants in Cardiff and Slough.


ChennaiDosa general manager and chef, Suresh Baskar, has overseen the opening of the Stretford restau- rant. He said: “We have been working on the refurbishment of the restau- rant for three months now and we have done everything from scratch so it was really terrific to get to the opening night of our first North West branch.”
