News & Views TV journalists murdered in Bangladesh

Two well-known Bangladeshi televi- sion journalists have been killed at their home in Dhaka. Golam Mustofa Sarowar and his wife, Meherun Runi were stabbed to death in February and a month later no arrests or charges had been made.

More than 50 journalists from differ- ent media organizations staged a token strike in front of the National Press

Club in Dhaka, demanding the arrest and trial of those behind the murder of the journalists. The campaign for justice is also taking an international direction. Journalists and Bangladeshi expatriates in Bonn, Germany, have asked for United Nations’ intervention to ensure ‘greater transparency in the enquiry and arrest of the killers without further delay.’

Dozens of expatriate Bangladeshis along with citizens from other countries joined hands to form a human chain on the UN campus in Bonn that currently hosts 17 United Nations institutions. Journalists from Germany’s interna- tional broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) Radio also participated in the human chain. Sagar had worked with the DW Bangla service from June 2008 to May 2011 as a radio host and reporter.

Historic building reopens as spice restaurant

Merchants of Colegate in Norwich started life in the 18th century as a pub, became a refuge for women and chil- dren during the Second World War, and has been a pub and a restaurant since then. Now, it has reopened as a curry

restaurant after an £80,000 refurbish- ment and is called Merchants of Spice. Cousins Affsor Ali and Juned Ali are behind the venture which will offer sev- eral signature dishes including a crab curry, spicy mussels and honey mus-

tard duck as well as traditional favou- rites. The refurbishment has taken around four months to complete and aims to position the restaurant at the upper end of the quality spectrum.
