by Marc Ayotte The Campbell girls’ softball team ran their record to an unblemished 7-0 this season with three victories this past week. CHS posted a 6-5 win over Prospect Mountain and followed that up with an 18-1 dismantling of Derryfield and a 13-0 whitewashing of Somersworth.
Lady Cougars found themselves in an unfamiliar situation. Not only were they trailing to visiting Prospect Mountain, Campbell was being shutout through four and two-third innings. A string of four timely hits with two outs in the fifth pushed four Cougars across the plate, pulling them

to within a run. Two of those hits came from Allie Nolan and Lauren King, who had back- to-back singles with each driving in a pair of runs. Trailing 5-4 in the home half of the sixth inning, it was sister Erin who delivered a ‘King’ sized hit when she went yard; her two run homer over the centerfield fence proved to be the game winner, as Campbell escaped on the top side of the 6-5 thriller. Nolan, in addition to her batter’s box production, picked up the win in the circle, striking out 13 Timberwolves along the way. After suffering the near scare, the Cougars bats made sure there would be no repeat in their next two games. Against a hapless Derryfield team, who came into Cougar Country winless at 0-6,
Campbell needed only four and a half innings to compile a 26 hit attack, leading to the 18-1 final. After scoring four in the first and notching seven runs in each of the second and third innings, Campbell’s bid for the shutout was squashed when Allie Nolan surrendered her only run of the game in the fourth. In going the abbreviated distance, Nolan gave up only three hits, not allowing a walk in her nine-strikeout performance. For the Cougars, Chelsea Caynon and Brittany McNulla led the fireworks at home plate. Caynon had two hits, including a home run, accounting for her four RBI. McNulla remained stellar at the plate, going 4 for 5 with a double and four ribbies. Carrie Fernandez produced nicely for Coach
Gatherum’s Ladies, with a perfect 3-3, knocking in two. Brianna Hardy took advantage of her playing time with two singles and an RBI, while Emily Paquin recorded three singles and Shannon Lavigne got in the scorebook with a single. The Cougar bats continued to pound out hits three days later when a rusty Somersworth squad made its way to Litchfield, not having played in 10 days. The Hilltoppers would soon wish their lay-off was at least 11 days long, as Campbell unleashed 14 hits, scoring 13 times in their second win of the season over last year’s state championship game losers. The Cougars jumped on starter and loser Erica Boulanger, who has not enjoyed much success against her Campbell foes during the past three seasons, with three in the first and four in the second. Conversely, Allie Nolan sparkled in the circle once again, allowing just one hit (a fourth inning single), fanning 10 Hilltoppers in improving her season mark to a tidy 6-0.
Several Cougars enjoyed a multi-hit game. Erin King, for the second time in a week, delivered the dagger to the opposition; this time her walk-off, 2 RBI double in the fifth inning made the game official. King went 2 for 3 on the day, adding a triple and four runs batted in to her resume. Julia Marra went 2-4, including a double, with three RBI, Shannon Lavigne slapped a wall-ball double to go along with a single as well as scored a pair of runs and Emily Paquin chimed in going 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Slugger Chelsea Caynon started things off for the Cougars in the bottom of the first when she hit a 3 run blast for her second homer of the season and her second in as many games.
CHS Baseball Fires Back to Back to Back Shutouts by Marc Ayotte
Like their female, Lady Cougar counterparts, the Campbell’s boys’ baseball team played three games last week. And like their sisters of the base paths, they picked up wins in all three games, also improving to an identical and unblemished 7-0 mark on the season. If there was a trump card in the proceedings for the players on the 90 foot base paths, it could be found in the fact that, unlike the softball team who was torched for six runs over three games (he wrote with jocularity), Coach Jim Gorham’s defensive ensemble recorded three consecutive shutouts, emerging as the only undefeated team in NH division III baseball. Yes indeed, times are fine for anyone involved in a Campbell sport that involves using a bat, a glove and a ball. With the boys also enjoying a four game home stand, the first leg of their shutout trifecta came on April 23, when the host Cougars pounded Prospect Mountain in a mercy-shortened game by a score of 11-0. The Timberwolves entered Cougar Country, confident and cocky about their 6-0 start to the 2012 campaign. But after running into a five inning gem hurled by Travis Manning along with surrendering eleven hits, including three long balls, the T’wolves, humbly boarded the bus ride back home to Alton, painfully aware the Cougars mean business in their state title defense. Manning, who went to 3-0 as a starter, scattered
five hits, striking out four while walking only one opponent while receiving more than ample offensive support. On the season, Manning has yielded only one earned run in 16.2 innings of work for a jaw-dropping .43 ERA (determined on a seven inning base). Sean Gray led off the bottom of the first with a two-bagger and scored the winning run moments later when he scored on an

pitching when Connor Sahlin went yard to lead off the home half of the second; “that one was three quarters of the way up the trees” added the colorful Cougar Coach. With two outs in the third and Campbell leading 5-0, Sahlin launched his second tree-seeking sphere into the blue sky, a solo shot that gave the Cougars a 6-0 lead. Campbell closed out the game’s scoring by posting five runs in the bottom of the fourth. A two RBI double by Christian Bourgea and double to left center by Neild, scoring Bourgea highlighted the Cougars’ final trip to the plate.
OFF Campbell went to 6-0 on the
year four days later when they used up only five innings of the regularly scheduled seven inning affair to inflict a 10-0 hurting on Derryfield. The crimson-colored Cougars took to the field, owners of nothing

but “6 red L’s” posted on the NHIAA’s website. With inverted records depicting the two team’s respective places in the D-3 standings, Campbell sent Vinnie Bucci to the mound for his first varsity start. The Cougar pitcher responded admirably, no-hitting Derryfield through 4.1 innings of play. Bucci went the five innings needed in picking up the win, fanning eight while allowing only a single walk.
In the ho-hum encounter, Campbell
broke a scoreless deadlock after the first inning by scoring in each of the next four innings, culminating in a four run fourth and a game clinching, three run fifth. Zach Byers led the Cougar onslaught after being inserted into the game in the third inning. Byers belted a double into the right centerfield gap and followed that up with a triple down the right field line, aiding in his three RBI performance. Chuck Neild provided the game winning shot with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the second. Cody Caron sealed the deal for Gorham’s guys when he smoked a three run blast over the fence in left center, not quite making amends with Gorham after the Cougar catcher, one pitch earlier, swung and missed on a 3-0 fastball. Finishing up the three game display of pitching and defensive excellence, the Cougars defeated rival Somersworth with a well-earned 4-0 blanking of the team they defeated in last year’s
state title game. The victory also marked the second time on the young season that Campbell had defeated the Hilltoppers. Connor Sahlin got the nod from Coach Gorham, going 6.2 innings, limiting Somersworth to only two hits, and striking out 8 in his part of the combined shutout pitching performance. With the ‘W,’ Sahlin improved his record to 3-0.
Once again, Campbell scored the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the first. Sean Gray led off with a free pass and scored after a pair of Hilltopper fielding miscues. With a 2-0 lead entering the third, the Cougars pushed across an insurance run. Christian Bourgea stole second after walking. Chuck Neild then plated Bourgea with an RBI single. Campbell added another run in the sixth, closing the door on a frustrated Somersworth contingent. Campbell will play at Fisher Cat Stadium in
Manchester on Saturday, May 5, when they take on Mascenic, with a 2 p.m. first pitch scheduled. For the privilege of playing at the MLB Double-A venue, Campbell is responsible for selling 250 tickets to a Fisher Cats game against the Boston Red Sox affiliate Portland Sea Dogs at 7 p.m. on May 24. Coach Gorham encourages your support of the CHS baseball program by purchasing a ticket for the ‘Cats and Dogs’ matchup.

It was offense and defense that created this Broncos victory as Kaela Craven and Kaycee Carbone each played strong defensive games at third and second base. Kaela Craven also had a double on the night while Kaycee Carbone went 3 for 5 at the dish. Taylor Carbone went 5 for 5 at the plate with a home run, double
