LOW MILES , NICE!! Caught

This week I’m going to let one of my DCC begin- ning writing students substitute for me. Please read this fun narrative piece by Mr. Cody Vincent. One weekend in early spring of 2002, my adven- turous mom took my shy but cool 13-year-old broth- er, Tom, and my nine-year-old self to Lake Gaston. She thought it would be fun to test our new fishing skills and we were ready to catch “the big one.” On the first day, no one caught anything big or small. But then my brother and I saw hundreds of very large “pet” carp near the water’s edge. They were twisting and turning their various colors as they waited for the campground owner’s wildlife- loving wife to feed them corn kernels. A mischie- vous look took over Tom’s face. I had seen that look before, especially when we were about to get into trouble.

Tom got a couple pieces of corn from the ground. We waited for the carp feeder to leave. That’s when “the big one” was caught. Tom threw his corn-baited line into the edge of the water. Some of the giant spoiled fish had moved just out of the feeding circle. That’s when it happened. Tom snagged one of those fat, colorful carp and the fight was on. The wise, old giant fish started pulling and thrashing and whipping in the water. Tom’s reel began to whirl and squeal as the fighter fish tried to swim away. You could see little water droplets on Tom’s newly sprouted chin hair that looked like the chin barbs on a Black Drum fish which earned him the nickname of Drum Tom. My cool big brother was pulling for all his might. His olive green unbuttoned shirt was thrashing and blowing back and forth like a cape. He looked like a superhero fighting off a giant dinosaur fish. That’s when it happened.

Tom’s big baggy blue jeans began to drop. He started to yell, “Help! Somebody come hold my pants!” He was grabbing at his falling pants but could not hold on for fear of the warrior fish pulling his cherished rod into the lake. My mom and step- dad came to see what was going on. In spite of Tom’s frantic pleas, we all just stood and watched. Everyone’s face had huge smiles of delight, even my do-the-right-thing mom. You could hear my playfully crazy step-dad’s Woody Woodpecker’s cackle.

Tom pulled and struggled, reeled and cursed. The more he fought, the more his pants fell to the ground. Eventually he was standing in the wa- ter with his pants around his hairy ankles. The big green shirt was still flying in the wind. His legs stuck out from under his dingy blue boxers like two fuzzy white flagpoles. He was yelling and cursing at the old fish as if he had been defeated. Then the line broke and the winner got away.

To this day, I have not decided who, or what, caught “the big one,” the carp or Drum Tom.
