London visit

Sixteen children from Hillside

Community

First School attended the Commonwealth Day Observance Service at Westminster Abbey on 12 March.

They spent the morning

seeing some of London’s sights including the London Eye, Big Ben, Downing Street, Horse Guards’ Parade and Buckingham Palace.

Once inside the Abbey

they were led to their aisle- side seats and treated to a close up view of the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Countess of Wessex, as well as members of the government and many Commonwealth dignitaries. The children were mesmerised by the procession of colourful Commonwealth flags, with some flag bearers in national costume. “We were so close to

the Queen it was amazing. It was an awesome day!” said one of the children after the visit.

Stepping out

Children from Trinity CE VA First School made their mark for Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight by having fun producing footprints onto a huge canvas. Parents and siblings joined in and 188 steps were included, from very tiny to extra large. The school supports Fairtrade and has helped the foundation reach its 1.5 million step target.

Exploding Oompa

Loompa! Excited pupils at West Moors Middle School rose to the challenge of dressing up for World Book Day on 1 March. From Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee in the kitchens to an exploding Oompa Loompa, the whole school supported this day of celebrating books and reading. The event raised over £100 for the school library and all pupils were given a £1 book token. Prizes were also awarded for the best costumes in each year group and for the best dressed member of staff.

All pupils at Moyles Court School near Ringwood have been involved in fundraising for Sport Relief and other local charities. Some of the children ran their mile on 23 March. A team of staff including headmaster Mr Meakin joined a pupil squad in the Ringwood Rabbit Run on Sunday 25 March and the rest of the school ran 1.3 miles cross country on 28 March, completing the fund raising for Sport Relief. In total over 300 miles was run and more than £600 raised in a school of less than 200 pupils. Well done to everyone! The Rabbit Run is part of 1st

Poulner Scouts fundraising to build a multi-activity centre for local children.

The cloth merchant’s son who became St Francis of Assisi is an inspiring subject for drama given his rejection of material ways and quest for a spiritual life. Last month, pupils at Ringwood Waldorf School gave

this 12th century legend a musical re-enactment in a six- scene opera bursting with colour and expression. The 25-strong cast, some 11 years-old, others 12, took

to their arias, choruses and solos with gusto, charming audiences of around 300 in each show and the outcome was a joy that left hardly a dry eye. Francesco the opera was written and set to music

in the 1980s by two Steiner teachers, John Burnett and Oliver Mason.

Paint the Queen

Wimborne Minster Town Council is sponsoring a painting competition for children at St John’s and Wimborne 1st School as part of its celebrations to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Both schools are running an ‘in- class project’ for individuals to create a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Best in Class and Highly Commended portraits will be framed and hung in the children’s corner of the minster during the mini flower festival which runs from the 1-5 June 2012.
