by Gary Power - FAI Football Development Offi cer Waterford City

Football Association of Ireland: Waterford City

Introduction Hi, My name is Gary Power and I am the FAI Football Development Offi cer for Waterford City. As a development offi cer for the FAI and Waterford City Council, I am involved in organising, assisting, and delivering many different football development programmes in Waterford such as Coach Education, Summer Soccer Schools, Football For All, Emerging Talent Programme, Community Football, Grassroots participation, Schools and Colleges, and much more. This column each month will give an overview on the different activities that take place in Waterford and provide details on how to become involved in football in Waterford at many different levels

FAI/AVIVA Soccer

Sisters Easter Camp This Easter we held three FAI/AVIVA Soccer Sisters Easter Camps across Waterford, with Ferrybank AFC, Colaiste Cathal Naofa Dungarvan, and Cappoquin FC providing the host venues. The aim of the Easter Camps is to target girls between the ages of 06-12 years to take part in organised football. Girls Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and here in Waterford we have more and more girls’ teams from right across the County joining our Waterford Women’s League, which is continuing to grow. We also have an elite player pathway for girls through our ETP Girls Regional Centre and International Squads. The standard of girl’s football has never been so good and we will continue to drive forward the development of the girl’s game in Waterford.

Community Football Camp During the Easter holidays the FAI and Waterford Sports Partnership came together to run a very successful Community Football Camp, which was hosted by St Saviour’s FC. The community football camp had 60 kids in attendance over the three days and the kids all came from Ballybeg, Larchville/Lisduggan, Inner City and Sacred Heart, areas of Waterford City. The camp was delivered by our coaches from the FAI Project Futsal course, which is currently being run in Kingfi sher Sports Complex. This camp was a great success and we would like to thanks St Saviour’s FC, and Waterford Sports Partnership for their support.

FAI/EFLOW Summer

Soccer Schools 2012 Booking lines are now open for our annual FAI/EFLOW Summer Soccer Schools Programme. The Summer Soccer Schools are one of the largest and most successful programmes that we deliver and we have camps right across the whole of County Waterford. This year for the fi rst time we are also holding a girls only summer camp at Ferrybank AFC. The camps are open to boys and girls between the ages of 06-14 years old. FAI Schools Our annual FAI Primary Schools 5 A Side Competitions are now well underway with qualifi ers taking place in Ferrybank, Williamstown, and Kingfi sher. The FAI 5’s are an extremely popular competition amongst the local primary schools and we get a fantastic response from the local schools that take part. Also in Schools news well done to Blackwater CC Lismore who were crowned All Ireland Minor Girls Champions defeating Loreto from Kilkenny at the Waterford RSC. De La Salle College are also in two All Ireland Finals at U15 and U17 level which is an incredible achievement for the schools and for Waterford Schools Football. We also recently held a Schools International at the Waterford RSC where Ireland drew 1-1 with Scotland in the Centenary Shield.

EURO 2012 The excitement is already starting to build on what is going to be a fantastic Summer for football in Ireland when the Boys in Green head to Poland to take part in Euro 2012 with three top games to look forward too against Croatia, Spain, and Italy. We have one more game at the AVIVA Stadium before Ireland head off on their EURO 2012 adventure where we take on Bosnia/ Herzegovina in our fi nal warm up game. Tickets are now available for this match on Ticketmaster.
