INTERIORS Although many people are choosing to
wallpaper a single feature wall in many rooms, wallpapering all four walls is very much back in fashion and the sitting room is the one room where it is worth splashing out. Wallpaper adds so much texture and warmth to a room compared to paint and also adds formality. A good quality wallpaper will last for at least ten years in a child-free room so it is worth making the investment and enjoying it. If you have opted for a wooden floor in
your sitting room, a rug will also make it more cosy. Sitting rooms tend to be large rooms and your armchairs and sofas can seem somewhat isolated and disjointed if there is considerable space between them. A large rug on the floor in front of the fireplace that touches the legs of the various seating will ‘connect’ the seating and will make the seating feel more intimate which of course, helps to create a more convivial atmosphere. Don’t forget to choose a variety of
seating styles, as partly due to age, height, leg length, people tend to prefer different types of seating. The traditional three piece suite is not necessarily the best buy particularly if people in your family are of different heights - deep armchairs will suit tall people with long legs whereas smaller people will find that their feet don‘t touch the ground! Why not opt for a sofa with
some co-ordinating armchairs in a different style so there is something to suit everyone. Elderly visitors often prefer hard backed carver chairs or armchairs such as Queen Anne where it is easier to return to ones feet from a sitting position. Table lamps on side tables beside
sofas or armchairs will add to an intimate atmosphere, providing enough light to read/ work by and not necessitating the need for a central overhead light. Combined with a flickering fire, the scene is set for a relaxing evening. As it comes into the summer with long evenings, now is the time to start planning and working on the redecoration of your sitting room, to choose paint colours and wallpapers, cushions and sofas, rugs and lamps so the room will be completed and ready for later in the year when you are looking forward to cocooning for at least some evenings during the week. Decorating is much easier during the long summer evenings - enjoy!
