Jim D’Arcy, Waterford Youthreach

everybody deserves a second chance at education. For early school leavers aged 16-20 years, Youthreach offers opportunities to develop their vocational, literacy

J

and numerical skills and sit state examinations such as Leaving Cert Applied. Practical learning and work experience are key and with exciting new ways to learn like their horticulture course, students can learn essential skills, which are backed up with academic subjects. Jim believes leaving school is a conscious decision for all

students who are sometimes forced into the decision, through no fault of their own. They can be caught in situations like bullying, not fi tting in or problems at home. There are social welfare incentives to return to education

and with a small pupil teacher ratio, many of the students reach their potential with the top 10% going on to further education. Jim believes that school is the best place for kids and

encourages them to stay in main stream education, but for those who have left, Youthreach is a viable option once they have been out of the education system for six months or more.

Lynda Murphy FAB Network

M

y Waterford editor Lynda Murphy has been elected Chairperson

of FAB Network, which will replace Network Waterford for the coming year. Lynda, who is also owner of

Lawton Media, a media management

service in Waterford and Cork, has been a visible force in the media industry for the past ten years. Through her work with My Waterford and previously with the Waterford News & Star, Lynda was a regular face to many in business, but it is through her charity work that she is most recognisable, raising in excess of €300,000 for various charities in recent years. That work earned her the title of Waterford Person of the

Year (2 quarter) in 2009 and last year she won the Waterford Business Woman of the Year (Employee) Award. Coming in as Chairperson of FAB Network is a challenge

Lynda relishes and when it comes to organising events, nothing fazes her. “I’ve organised events for hundreds of people I didn’t even

know, so I hope that experience will help me put on some great events for business people in Waterford. The new FAB Network is an amalgamation of Network Waterford and the FAB Programme, so it will see experienced business people work alongside our newest entrepreneurs to build a better future for Waterford.”
