Karate Students Prepare for State Qualifier

everal of MAC’s karate students are preparing to participate in the annual Oregon State Qualifier for the U.S.A. National Karate Federation Nationals. This event is Saturday, April 28, and is necessary for Oregon karate practitioners to compete at the annual national competi- tion. Competitors from around the state compete against each other in the tradi- tional martial arts spirit.

Martial arts started out entirely focused on purely functional combative techniques. Almost all societies and cultures had some form of martial arts. The goal of early mar- tial arts was to win a physical confrontation. Early Japanese martial arts focused on spiri- tual development as well as combat skills. Sport-oriented martial arts have devel- oped during the 20th century. For the most part, these arts are based on the tech- niques used by the budo practitioner, but with a different goal. Judo, Kendo, Aikido and Karate-do were all formulated from the 1940s to the present to bring the old

martial arts to the masses, but without the dangerous techniques.

In some cases, certain styles and organizations have wandered quite a bit from their early roots. These organiza- tions focus only on the sport aspects of their discipline, kind of like basketball or baseball. However, traditional schools or clubs follow many of the same traditions, goals, discipline and techniques developed

by the early martial arts practitioners and formalized into systems by founders of the sport-oriented styles or ryu. By training in these styles, such as the karate taught at MAC, students can take advantage of all the benefits offered from martial arts and commonly found in all sports.

The annual qualifier has been hosted at MAC for many years. Competitors from six to 70 years old and from all over the state participate in the tournament. Participants have the option of competing in several types of events including kata, weapons and kumite. Typically, MAC karate club mem- bers are the largest group of competitors from a single school. Spectators are wel- come to come and watch the event. All MAC karate students participating in this event should be congratulated for committing to the vast amount of energy and dedication necessary to prepare for this tournament. The MAC karate club wishes them good luck at nationals to be held this summer.
