Center Elevator Closure Starts in July
T
his summer, the club’s Center Elevator closes for several weeks for a needed mechanical and infrastructure update. Members must find alternative routes if they need the aid of an elevator. The Center Elevator (elevator No. 4) is the primary means of vertical transporta- tion in the clubhouse for members, staff and many materials and equipment. Its central location provides access to nearly all areas in the building and it is the main conduit into the club from the upper floors of the parking garage.
This elevator has experienced signifi- cant downtime during the past few years, primarily due to excessive use and its age. Machine control data indicates that this elevator receives more than three times the average number of requests than a similar elevator does elsewhere.
The interior finishes and several indi- vidual mechanical components have been replaced many times over the years, and a few control components were replaced in 2001. However, the critical pieces of
equipment such as the machine, drive, sheave, hoist cables, governors and door operators are 1974 vintage.
Elevator consulting firm Lerch Bates was hired to assess conditions and make recommendations. Today’s code requires that the room housing the equipment be cooled, and this project adds cooling as well as other related work.
The Service Elevator was recently modernized to a similar degree after it ran to failure, and was off line for nearly three months. The East Elevators are scheduled for complete modernization in 2013. The Parking Garage elevators are scheduled for work in 2015, and the West Elevator in 2018. WM
