I recently attended a meeting with NAT (National AIDS Trust). Among those present was a nurse from 56 Dean Street, the sexual health clinic in Soho. Besides offering health checks at their premises, many clinic staff undertake outreach work in gay venues, offering HIV testing and advice on sexual health, among other services. Whilst doing such work at a bar in Soho, the nurse said that a young man approached him and said, “So what is this HIV thing that you’re testing for?” Shocking, huh? Then again, it can be so easy to take it for granted that everyone knows everything there is to know about HIV and AIDS. If you’ve been frequenting the gay scene for a few years, and reading the gay press, then you will, hopefully, be clued up about HIV and how the virus is passed on. It can be easy to forget that sexual health education in schools rarely discusses gay sex, and that many young men stumble on to the gay scene with little awareness about gay sex or HIV. Anyway, for that young man, and for anyone else like him, we’re running a feature this month on the most basic information that all gay men should know about HIV and AIDS. Whether you think you know the essentials or not, you can check out the facts on pages 62-64. Elsewhere in the magazine this month, we have a great interview with the one and only Madonna, who also graces our front cover. Larry Flick sat down with the queen of pop to find out all about the recording of her latest album, MDNA – which has remained resolutely stuck on the Out In The City stereo since its release last month. Last, but by no means least, we’ve got a great competition prize for you this month. Courtesy of Iceland Express, we’re offering one lucky reader the chance to win two tickets to this year’s Bears On Ice festival in Iceland in September – which will include return flights, accommodation and admission to all the festival’s associated events. Check out the details on page 56 – you’ve got until Friday 1 June to email us with an answer to the competition question. Enjoy the issue and keep sending us your feedback.
