NEW FRONTIERS AWARD 2012 RECOGNISES JAPAN'S RESILIENCE Continued from page 1

In Q1 2012, inbound visitors

from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan reached record highs and attractive tour packages targeting European visitors are also slowly yielding results. Accepting the award,

Matsunaga said: “On behalf of the Japanese people, we are honoured to receive this prestigious award from the Middle East’s tourism industry. Our plans for phased recovery are moving forward and the efforts of our tourism board and related government bodies are instrumental in reconfi rming to the world that Japan is certainly a destination of untold natural beauty and cultural wealth.

“There is still some ground

to be recovered, but we are already seeing a return to normality in many areas of the economy – of which tourism is a major driver – and we appreciate the support and recognition of the tourism industry in this region,” he said. Launched in 2005 by Arabian

Travel Market, The New Frontiers Award was created to recognise outstanding contributions to tourism development in the face of overwhelming adversity. As well as the prestigious

crystal trophy, the New Frontiers Award comprises ATM exhibition space valued at US$10,000 along with additional

marketing support in promoting the outstanding tourism opportunities offered by Japan. Japan was selected as winner

of the New Frontiers Award by a panel of judges consisting of industry professionals from across the globe. From an original selection of 10 countries, which was then refi ned to a shortlist that included Australia and Brazil, Japan was chosen after the judges considered a number of decisive factors: support from local and national governments; utilisation of international aid packages; tangible signs of recovery; and overall effort on behalf of government and citizens.

Ras Al Khaimah TDA indicate that in 2011 Ras Al Khaimah received 835,200 visitors compared to 600,000 in 2010, demonstrating a robust increase of 40 percent. Occupancy levels for the beach resorts during 2011 were a healthy 70 percent and 65 percent in city hotels. Continuing its growth, Ras Al Khaimah received extremely positive results for the fi rst quarter of 2012, where the total number of hotel guests reached 306,750 (compared to a total of approximately 208,000 for the same period in 2011) and resulting in a 47 percent increase. There were also a number

of announcements made yesterday from leading hotel groups that included Carlson Rezidor and Cristal Hotels (for details see pages 6 and 7). Jebel Ali International Hotels also presented the fi rst four- star beachfront hotel in Dubai to journalists, while Sharjah announced the launch of a new eco-tourism project in Kalba City.
