GETTING IN THE SWING IN AYRSHIRE
The latest of SLR’s retailer roundtables in association with ShelfHelp hit Turnberry Golf Course in Ayrshire last month and saw retailers from around the region gather to discuss the issues affecting them, and how they’re working to build their businesses.

ver the past year SLR has been delivering a series of regional roundtable discussions with local retailers in association with P&G’s ShelfHelp category management
programme. Having visited Glasgow and then Aberdeen, our final session took place last month in the splendour of Turnberry, where we met with some of the best retailers in Ayrshire to discuss the current trends and challenges before them.
The day was hosted by P&G’s Head of
Trade Communications Paul Lettice who highlighted that over the last decade his company has revitalised its commitment to the convenience trade. “To be fair, we got feedback from the trade that we had to do more with them and that’s exactly what we’ve done, with ShelfHelp as an example of that commitment,” said Lettice. To put that commitment in context, convenience retail is P&G’s second biggest collective ‘customer’ after Tesco, and

therefore commands a similar level of service to that received by the major multiple. Today, P&G is one of the most active suppliers engaging with convenience retailers in Scotland and has led the way with a range of innovative new media solutions, all under the ShelfHelp brand umbrella. For the uninitiated, ShelfHelp provides in- depth category management solutions in all six sectors that P&G are active in, across a series of store formats.
Our day in Ayrshire therefore, like the others before them, was to discover exactly what is affecting local retailers today. And the discussion began with a look at new media…
WHO USES THE INTERNET AND WHAT DO THEY USE IT FOR?
There are positive murmurs from the room, as retailers say they do use the internet at work, but the response is less positive when probed on whether they use it for category management advice. Chris McCallum (CM) – It’s available through Spar, but to be honest we don’t use it. We discuss planograms with CJ Lang when they visit the store though. George Smillie (GS) – I use the internet when I have to. Our ordering is hand-held with some time on the PC. It’s something I don’t like though, I’d rather be on the shop floor.
Mo Razzaq (MR)– We have an iPad back and front of shop. We use it to examine sales, and
