BE Oxygen and the Athlete


Athletes are aware of the importance of O2 to their performance. Singers, dancers, musicians, race car drivers, know that controlling their breathing has a lot to do with lifting their performances from merely good to GREAT!


O2’s function exceeds life support for all of us, not just performers.


And, if a little is good, is a lot great? Is there a negative effect of too much O2?


According to Universal Industrial Gases, Inc. the air we breathe contains only 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, traces of carbon dioxide and water vapor. Unless pollution or smog weighs the air you breathe down with toxins, that balance will not only sustain life, but when focused on will indeed improve every aspect of our lives:


• Performance • Restful Sleep • Weight maintenance • Happiness • Longevity


In other words, O2 isn’t the magic pill to a better life, but rather an element in the process of consciously improving our daily life. The real magic is our ability to breathe, an automatic action to sustain us, to support us, and allow for our survival. Real inspiration requires more than Oxygen, it requires awareness of the process of inhaling, expanding our diaphragm to allow for more O2 to enter our body, then exhaling so the CO2, the waste materials, the free radicals, the toxins can be removed from our systems.


Some cultures, the Maori of New Zealand, use breath exchange through the nostrils as a form of greeting. The gesture indicates acceptance and willing vulnerability to the other person. Horses and other species share in this intimate practice acknowledging the importance of breathing to their survival. Beyond a greeting, beyond a shared intimacy, active people are aware of their breathing’s contribution to their health, well-being, and performance.


Free form divers, who explore the ocean’s depths without auxiliary air supply, swim into the deepest water for many minutes by practicing breath control. Their endurance, their depths, their survival depends on their body communicating the parameters of the dive - before, during, and after the event.

With the development of scuba tanks, nitrogen tanks, divers’ survive because of their use of the air in those tanks. Inexperienced divers are known for the short time they are able to spend beneath the water on the dive. Their natural anxiety causes the hyperventilation that uses up the oxygen faster than the more experienced divers who are able to control their oxygen consumption with practice.


More vigorous sports keep oxygen supplies for delivery of the element to improve a football player’s performance. Runners, tennis players, and other activities that accelerate the body’s energy process benefit from a “shot” of oxygen during a game or a match. The effects are obvious, and are purely physical, not just mental.


Our body’s design is an engineering miracle. To take advantage of this design, all we need do is be aware of how it functions and what it needs to function at its peak performance for the longest period of time. As in all things in nature, there is timing, balance, and coordination between separate elements to produce and maintain our environment.


As O2 is vital to our survival, the other substance is water.


Since the water content in our body ranges from 60% to 76% or more, according to www.livestrong.com and water’s chemical composition is H20 (for every 2 parts of Hydrogen there’s 1 part of Oxygen). Maintaining a well-hydrated body has advantages for the athlete and non-athlete alike. With Oxygen’s scrubbing bubbles carried to our cells on water-enriched blood, they remove the waste, toxins, and free radicals faster. The amount of time those poisons remain in our body contribute to the destruction of cells either from disease or aging.


To enhance our lives while we’re living them, and to lengthen our lives in physical and mental health, it’s past time to pay attention to our breath. Your overall physical health can be measured by the oxygen content of your blood, your willingness to be active, your happiness factor are often a function of your breathing patterns. Ask your body, it’s never too late for awareness of breathing to enhance your oxygen intake and improve your life!
