The combustion team took the Formula world by storm, coming out ahead of more than 100 teams from around the globe from the start of the official collaboration during competition in Michigan.

It wasn’t an easy road, though. Although the essence of the SAE effort lies with the team as a unit, it’s up to individuals to create and test dozens of different components of the car, which means that many individual efforts must coalesce into a synchronous whole. It seems unlikely, given that the effort involves 80 students an ocean apart, but they found ways to make it work.

“You end up learning about global collaboration, and working with the German students was an amazing learning experience you’d never get if you weren’t involved with this program,” Murray says. “It’s extremely relevant to companies. Most large engineering firms in the world are global conglomerates.”

In 2012 the stakes for the team are even higher. But Murray is proud of the team’s success. “There’s not a lot of things you can get respect for being one of the best universities in the world. In the past two years we’ve never lost a competition we’ve finished,” Murray says.

The Formula Student challenge is a construction competition held by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Its purpose is to develop and support young engineers.

Since the beginning in 1979 the Formula Student competition has developed into an international competition with participants from over 20 different countries of all continents. Up to 150 teams participate in numerous racing events held at famous locations (such as Silverstone or the Hockenheimring). The growing popularity of the Formula Student competition is proven by the rapidly rising number of participants and the establishment of new events.

For participating students, the Formula Student competition is a unique chance to test their theoretical knowledge in a practical context. Moreover, they gain and develop skills such as efficient project organization, team work and working under the pressure of a deadline.

Due to the active collaboration with companies from various businesses (e.g. the automotive industry), the Formula Student competition holds great opportunities for participants to connect with potential employers. By the sponsoring companies this competition is considered as an ideal recruiting platform for young talents.
