ARTS

In May, Barnabas Arts House will be holding a new exhibition – The Human Condition. This exciting mixed show offers an intense insight into the soul of the subject conveyed through an array of interpretations of the term ‘portraiture.’ This eclectic exhibition of portraits features works by Philip Muirden, Jamie Routley, Mike Rowland, Thomas Rathmell, Alex Arnell, Andrew Worsfold, Bev Westacott and Anna Bush Crews. Social subjects will

stare out from the Barnabas walls this month, in myriad multi-medium forms and a collection of contrasting expressions. Ranging from high profile

cultural figures to illustrations created from childhood family snapshots, The Human Condition is endearing in its character-laden variety. The theme of the human

condition means the gallery space will feature a line-up of differing takes on humanity, ranging from former athletics coach, Mike Rowland’s sports-themed portrayals to Philip Muirden’s pencilled fellow passengers on public transport and patrons of his local pub. Barnabas Arts House is

Newport’s only independent arts house striving to make art an entity accessible to all by offering a creative hub in the heart of the urban landscape.

How absolutely spot on have the Chinese got it

this year? l According to their horoscope, 2012 is the year of The Dragon! Alright so it’s the Black Water Dragon but I’m interpreting that to the year of the Welsh Dragon! We’ll start with the Rugby: “The

Triple Crown 6 Nations 2012 Grand Slam winners” nuff said! From Sport to talent! Why are TV

producers even bothering to pacify the rest of The UK? They should just set up camp in South Wales! You’ve got Clydach Vale’s David Faulkner, who did an amazing rendition of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’ on The Voice. And the 133 strong teenage lad choir from the Valleys “Only Boys Aloud” who not only sang the most awe inspiring version of Calon Lan, but actually made BGT watchable again! Then there’s Sophie Evans, 19 from

Rhondda, who now not only wows her team of A list fans (including Gary Barlow and Gwyneth Paltrow) and the Great British public every night as Dorothy in the West End production of The Wizard of OZ, but is also releasing some new material which I’ve been reliably informed, we should listen out for. Talking of new material, I heard Lucie Jones (formerly of The X Factor) play some new songs at the launch of The Cardiff Music Festival. Now it’s always tricky hearing new stuff then having to feign enthusiasm for it to someone’s face after a heartfelt performance, but it wasn’t a problem. The songs were absolutely fantastic. But, and there is a but…..well more a “butt” really. Lucie, we could all see yours through what I can only describe as “netting”. If that hasn’t got Welsh pride pumping

through your veins then there’s a cute Welsh kid on a Haribo tv advert! Diolch!

Kam Kelly. Catch Kam on the Capital South Wales breakfast show every week day morning!

A GROOM’S EYE VIEW...

I blame Burt Reynolds… and that kid with the wonky eye and banjo.

Actually I blame Burt, the wonky

eye boy, and those check-wearing hillbillies who like cuddling with their cousins way too much. I’m of course talking about

Deliverance and probably the biggest reason why my mum’s fidgety about our choice of honeymoon. We want to spend three weeks travelling down Route 66, which ironically is nowhere near the kind of places where a sixth finger comes in handy for counting the pigs. Alas my mum still remembers Burt and his pals getting

into a canoe and paddling up the creek... quite literally. And because of that she’s got it into her head that we’re going to be befriended at some roadside dinner by a random redneck who names his pets after power tools and opens cans of beans with his teeth (or should that be tooth?). Anyway, personally I prefer to take the Judith Charmers approach to holidaying. OK so the Wish You Were Here star had the kind of

bronzed skin that Primark make handbags out of, but she knew how to relax and gently nudge you into trying something new for your two-week summer getaway. My mum likes Judith too, and America, but she’s seen

one too many late night movies where the group of kids take a wrong turn and end up in the forest dwellers’ stew. She doesn’t need to worry just yet though as we’re still at the planning stage. Route 66 starts in Chicago and takes you through seven states all the way to sunny LA. It’s give or take about 2,500 miles and if I was my mum I’d be more worried about my driving than the locals. Just in case we do encounter any rednecks though, I’m

already creating some alter egos for us so we can fit in a little more discretely around the campfire. To help me I found a website on the internet that generates

your own hillbilly name. Mine is Goose Walker, the other half’s Bobby Jean. And my mum? Well she’s Kissy Rambler. I think she’d be happy. But what about Judith? She ended up with Jackson Hole,

which according to Google is a small town in Wyoming famous for pig wrestling. To quote the local newspaper the Jackson Hole Daily in

its preview of the 2009 county fair ‘The pig wrestling contest begins at 7pm against highly trained swine athletes’. Maybe Judith won’t be able to relax quite so much.

@For_Luca

Of course this one is the top of the shop for us this month – it’s the Twitter account that follows Luca’s journey. If you haven’t heard about For Luca then you’ve obviously been on another plant. If you have then you’ll know that Luca is the bravest little man in the world! Follow! Follow! Follow!

Like the cat suit on the front of this month’s mag? Then this is the lady to follow. Hannah is one of the area’s most exciting young and up-and- coming fashion designers.

@Hannah_E_Cooper

The sponsors of South Wales’ Next Top Model (#swntm) surely deserve a follow? With their boundless energy and string of contacts, this year’s competition looks set to be bigger and better than ever before!

Probably the best locally run festival in the UK, Caerleon Arts Festival is growing year on year – and this year looks set to be no different. Why not give them a follow and head on over this summer?

Give Newport Festival a follow to keep up to date on the Big Splash, The SuperDragons and all of the other exciting stuff that’s going down!
