G Is for Green
Their first fundraiser — a yard sale, along with a farm tour, yoga and a kids drumming workshop — was held on the farm in April and despite being rained out raised more than $150, enough for 10 weeks of veggies for a family in need. “The event helped raise awareness about the farm, and I'm hoping our next event will be even bigger,” she says.
Flourishing Keeping a farm going is no easy task. “There’s a ton of sweat equity going into the farm,” she says. Both Fiallos and her husband have jobs outside of the farm as well. Lawrence is a teacher, and Maya runs a multimedia company. “That experience helps, as I designed our website and have a lot of experience with social media and marketing,” she says. Next up, Maya would like to build a large chicken house for free-range, organic eggs.
So far, as a business, says Fiallos, “We’ve broken even, but as a dream and a lifestyle, we’re flourishing.”
Before the crops are ready to harvest, Maya and Lawrence carefully pick weeds and inspect for pests.
