BEHIND THE SCENES England fans

ITV COVERAGE

ITV STARTS ITS TV COVERAGE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 8

FIRST IRELAND GAME SUNDAY, JUNE 10

FIRST ENGLAND GAME MONDAY, JUNE 11

on the way to the City Mayor’s office. Finally everyone agreed and we hired a Polish architect to design what will be home to Adrian Chiles and his pundit team for three weeks. Said pundit team has come together

just as we hoped. If we were playing in the tournament rather than broadcasting it our central midfield partnership of Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira would have been eye-catching, if a little fiery. The two are full of mutual respect, even if they didn’t always see eye-to-eye on the pitch.

Joining our regular analyst, Gareth

Southgate, will be Liverpool centre-half Jamie Carragher, who brings us a strong contemporary English perspective. Roberto Martinez can look at the game from a Spanish point of view, but with

a thorough knowledge of the British audience. And Gordon Strachan will bring us the manager’s perspective as well as an abundance of fun. Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend

will commentate on our England matches and other key games in Ukraine, while Peter Drury and Jim Beglin will be there for the Republic of Ireland matches as well as all the key action in Poland. Once again we’ve made a few key loan signings, borrowing Jon Champion and Craig Burley from ESPN. We will, as usual, share the matches with the BBC, though this year the method for selecting which broadcaster gets which match was done using a new, revolutionary system – we tossed a coin. The BBC won the toss and chose first pick of the quarter-finals, which leaves ITV with two of England’s group games and Ireland’s opening two matches against Croatia and Spain; we get first pick in Brazil for the next World Cup as a consequence. The Irish were a highly welcome late arrival at the Euro party, after winning a

two-legged play-off against Estonia. Ireland’s camp will be in the lovely beach town of Sopot, just outside Gdansk, which will host their intriguing second match against holders Spain. The German team is also staying in town, which means Gdansk could well be hosting the eventual winners, and will need to keep its brewery running to capacity. Everything is in place for what

promises to be an exciting and high- quality tournament. We know that huge audiences back home will tune in for these matches and we believe we’re ready to broadcast them to an excellent standard. The rest is down to the players – let’s hope England and Ireland give us some nights to remember.
