these other girls are way more talented,” Carly said of the competition at the finals, which featured 10 singers in the performance category and five in the original song category. “Then they said the winner won both categories, and I thought, ‘Maybe,’ but I still thought somebody else was going to win. Then they said, ‘Carly Paige,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’”

Chick with Picks co-founders Pandy Raye and Rhonda Hitchcock presented Carly with two big fake checks “that I can hang on my wall,” she said. The real money — $1,000 for winning the performance side and $500 for original song — has already been deposited in her bank account, Carly said.

Acoustic CD in the works After winning the event, Carly wasted little time as she met with a producer Tuesday, recording some of her acoustic music for a small CD she plans to pass out at future live performances, she said. She hasn’t decided what she’ll do with

the eight hours of studio time won in the contest yet, or when her paid gig will be. For now, she’ll just concentrate on what she’s been doing for years: making new music.

“I’m just going to keep writing,” she said. “Right now it’s just me and my guitar.” To check out a sample of what she can do with said guitar, visit her Youtube page, CarlyPaigeMusic.

“The more I was up there, and the feedback from the judges, it helped me and I was more comfortable,” she said. “I just tried my best, sang the best I could, I guess it paid off.”

The video that propelled her career, “Just Imagine,” was put online when she was 12. It’s a tribute to one of her favorite bands, the Beatles, as it uses their song titles as lyrics. She’ll perform the song at Saturday’s festival, Carly said. Carly’s rise to the top of the Chicks with Picks singing contest began with an April 1 performance in a preliminary round event at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park. Each round had three different celebrity

judges. The Litchfield Park show got Carly into the semi-finals for original song. She then performed in another preliminary round April 4 in Scottsdale, and those judges sent her through on performance. She was one of 11 that made it out of

Though which victory — talent show or singing contest — meant the most? “Both are super cool,” Carly said. “The talent show was because it was all my peers, but the Chicks with Picks contest was amazing.”

Tolleson resident took second At the finale April 22, Tolleson resident Suzy Kraintz won second place in the performance category, the only other place with a reward. “It’s definitely an honor; it was a lot of

fun,” said Kraintz, a 29-year-old mother of two. Taking home second place got Kraintz four hours of recording time at Epicentre Recording Studio in Phoenix and a guitar. She already has plans for both, as the singer will record two of her newest original songs at the studio and plans to learn how to play the guitar with her new instrument.

the April 15 semi-finals as 25 singers competed at the event. Carly said she feels she got better as the contest went on.

During the Chickstock singing contest, Kraintz performed her original song, “You Step Down,” which she will release as a digital single in the summer via her Facebook page, Sam and Suzy Music, as well as an Alicia Keys cover tune, “If I Ain’t Got You.” Kraintz got to watch Carly perform at three separate shows and was impressed by the young singer. “At her age, writing songs like that, she is amazing,” Kraintz said. “A lot of great things are in store for her.” The first will be performing at Saturday’s Chickstock Music Festival. Avondale resident Teneia Sanders, who won the 2011 Chickstock Singing Contest, will also be part of the lineup. Chickstock Music Festival 2012 will not only feature those two West Valley singers, but also national artists, such as Williams. Others performing at the event include the Sugar Thieves, November Bay, Mary Hoffman, Haven James, the Waters, Cali Rodi, Ladonna and Chicks with Picks co-founders Rhonda and Pandy. Tickets are $25, and children 12 and younger are admitted for free. For information, visit azchickswithpicks.com.
