by Marc Ayotte After evening their season record at one up and one down, the Lady Python’s lacrosse team suffered a pair of disappointing losses. On Thursday, April 19, Pelham dropped a home game to Gilford, 17-11. Five days later, the Pythons visited Derryfield and although the defensive effort stiffened in the second half, Pelham still fell to the host Cougars by the score of 16-5. At the friendly confines of Harris Field, Pelham

played a solid first half against the visiting Golden Eagles. With 14:18 remaining in the half, the Pythons held a slim 4-3 lead. After PHS keep Alex David stoned Gilford’s Hannah Vachon from point blank range (see photo), the Pythons still held a precarious 7-6 advantage heading into the waning minutes of the half. However, in the last 3:50 before the intermission, the Golden Eagles went on a 5-0 rampage to take an 11-7 lead. The Pythons came as close as they were going to come when Brooke Paradis scored just 1:07 into the second half to pull within three. After staying close for the ensuing dozen minutes, Gilford built upon their 13-8 lead in the last ten minutes, on their way to the six-goal win. After the game, Pelham head coach Kaite Carmody admitted that the aggressiveness of the game took its toll on her Python squad. Additionally, Carmody was hoping for improvement in ball possession and control, but it was not there to be found. Offensively, the Pythons showed promise with Brooke Paradis leading the way, scoring the double hat trick (six goals). Becca DeBaldo (three goals) along with a goal each from Broghan Gilligan and Michela Roman rounded out the Python scoring. In goal, Alex David and Erica

accustomed to, was certainly an advantage for the already quicker Derryfield squad. In the loss, a bright spot in the limited Python offense came in the play of Brittany Ragonese; “she stepped it up today playing midfield” noted Carmody, adding “she showed intensity I wish the entire team had”.

Pelham keep, Alex David, makes a basket save on a point blank shot from Gilford’s #2, Hannah Vachon

Calistro once again shared keep duties, with David playing the first half and Calistro replacing her for the final 25 minutes. Against Derryfield, Coach Carmody

acknowledged that “we struggled with our transition in the first half” in addition to not communicating effectively on defense. As a result, the Pythons found themselves on the bottom half of a 14-4 score heading into the break.

Alex David, after replacing Calistro in net, provided a second half spark defensively, as she

shutdown the Derryfield offense with an eight save performance. “She played a great second half” said Carmody of David. “It’s tough to share the duty” added Carmody but said she will continue splitting the time between the goalies as they each obtain experience and until one emerges as the top stopper. Unfortunately for Pelham, their offense, as well as Derryfield’s, also went on a sabbatical, recording only one second half goal. Coach Carmody admitted that playing on a turf surface as opposed to natural grass, of which Pelham is
