Adequate Sleep. My first suggestion

regarding a good night’s sleep is to redefine “good.” As a new parent, you’ll need to set realistic goals for sleep habits. Advice often given for new parents is to “sleep when baby sleeps.” This is great advice—except for those who work, have other children, or simply have a difficult time napping, it isn’t realistic. How do you know if you are getting adequate sleep? Watch your energy system symptoms. Headaches, moodiness, and frequent illness may be signs that you are overextending yourself physically. Look at your night-time parenting plan as a long- term investment for you and your children. 6. Seek Medical Advice. Talk to your doctor about all symptoms, including emo- tional changes such as moodiness, frustra- tion, sadness, and anger. If you find yourself weepy throughout the day, you may be well within the normal range of mood changes for emotional well-being, but it never hurts to seek professional guidance.

As a coach, I help parents set them-

selves up for success. This doesn’t need to be an overwhelming three- to five-year goal-oriented plan. Success is a day by day journey. Focus on the small steps that help you operate at your best. If you know the morning feels chaotic, try to pre-organize as much as possible: Pack the diaper bag and stow it in the car, place workout clothes in a duffel and have it ready to go, set up the cof- fee pot, or wake 20 minutes early to meditate and review your task list. Your sense of peace requires an individualized program and you’ll know you’re on track with your life when stress is low, you enjoy your day, and your emotions no longer feel like a ride at the fair.
