The Dickey-Welch Loop is a favorite springtime hike! Nearly half the loop is over open ledges allowing for grand mountain views in all directions. The trail is maintained by the Waterville Valley Athletic and Improvement Association. Organized in 1888 the WVAIA managed recreational activities of the Waterville Valley and “to encourage all healthful exercise and afford facilities thereto.” Visit their website at

PATENAUDE from 6 We passed people going
both directions. Luck- ily the busy trail never seemed crowded and we were able to hike our own pace without ever having to hike in a line. Welch’s summit was
grand and we could see mountains in every di- rection! Moosilauke had a little snow only on its north end. We sat down for a few minutes to soak in the view and consumed our meager supplies. Dickey is only 3/10th
of
a mile away but a steep little notch separates the two peaks and of course the trail must go down and then back up. Rachel thought it looked much farther but she was sur- prised how quickly we reached Dickey. On top we enjoyed a great view of Cannon and the snow- capped Franconia Range. From here it was all
downhill and we strolled along more open ledge. Nearly half the loop is along open ledge. There are a good number of side paths to more open ledges and cliffs but we didn’t go
off exploring this trip. We were back at the car
sooner than we thought we would be but not soon enough to save my car seat from the melted choc- olate bar I absentmindedly left behind. Our adventure took us only two hours (AMC White Mountain Guide recommends to al- low at least 3 hours). Rachel and I really en-
Big views for modest effort--the panorama from the top of Welch Mountain is grand and to the north includes Cannon Mountain and the Franconia Range.
