Music school to welcome new headmaster

ritain‘s oldest specialist music school is set to welcome a new headmaster who will take
it through to its next chapter. The Purcell School, in Aldenham Road, is a
boarding and day school for young musicians which offers a well rounded education with music at its heart. David Thomas will join as headmaster from
September. He has an honours degree in music from
Oxford University and has been headmaster of Reigate Grammar School for the past 11 years. He has also worked as director of music at two
schools. He said: ―I am looking forward to the new challenges that this appointment will bring.
‘As a musician myself, I am very privileged to be given the
opportunity to lead a world-class music school’

be given the opportunity to lead a world-class music school and help the next generation of musical stars.‖ Mr Thomas is on the Academic Policy
Committee of the Headmasters‘ and Headmistresses‘ Conference, is a former Chair of HMC South East Division, a former A-level examiner and an ISI Inspector. He is also the author of a report for the
National College of School Leadership on senior leadership teams in successful schools.
New headmaster David Thomas. Chairman of Governors, Roy Cervenka, said:
―The governors were unanimous in selecting Mr Thomas from a strong field and are confident that he has the necessary experience, vision and total commitment that will be required to move the school forward.‖ Mr Thomas will be supported in the role by his
wife Andrea, a historian who specialises in Scottish History. The governors said are very grateful to the
current headmaster, Paul Elliott, for guiding them through the current academic year. by Emily Ansell
