Mamma mia! Dad to complete epic bike ride

O

ne local man plans to enjoy pizza in Perugia and a pint in a quintessential English

village on a bike ride challenge with a difference. Danny Ackerman, 55, of Oakridge Avenue and

his close friend Jason St Hill will journey from the Italian town of Assisi in Perugia to the pretty town of Berkhamsted to raise money for The Hospice of St Francis. They hope to raise £25,000 for the hospice

which cared for Jason‘s stepdaughter Stephanie Pratt who died of bowel cancer in June last year. She was 30. Driving out to Italy on Friday, June 8, with

their supportive wives, the duo will start their 14-day cycle on Sunday, June 10, which will see them travel through the Alps, Switzerland and France.

‘I have been cycling for ten years and have taken part in numerous

charity cycles across the world, but this is certainly my biggest and longest challenge’

The father-of- two who has lived in the village

for 25 years said: ―Jason was enamoured over the care and hard work of the hospice and he couldn‘t believe that the hospice is so short of funds - meaning they are unable to care for more people. He wanted to do the challenge for them and Stephanie. The care was amazing and I decided to join him and help him raise as much money possible for a worthy cause. ―I have been cycling for 10 years and have

taken part in numerous charity cycles across the world, but this is certainly my biggest and

longest challenge. I have even been attending the gym twice a week which is something I try to avoid at all costs.‖ The 1,200 mile challenge will put the pair

through their paces as they cycle over 100 miles per day. Staying in basic accommodation, they will have two days of rest to recuperate. Their equipment was provided by bike

specialists Shorter Rochford. Danny added: ―We have already raised nearly

£9,000 which just shows how supportive friends, family and the community are. Along the way we will cycle with a number of Jason‘s friends including those in Italy who are members of the same cycling club as Jason. ―When we reach our last check point in

Windsor we hope to have over 50 of our friends joining us on the last hurdle on Sunday, June 24 – the anniversary of Stephanie‘s death. We hope to make her proud.‖ For more information or to donate
