good success. There are three classes of medication for allergies: antihistamines, decongestants and anti-inflammatory drugs, and most are available without a prescription. Antihistamines, like Benadryl and Claritin, help with itchy, watery eyes, scratchy throat and runny nose by blocking the effect of the chemical histamine that is produced by the body in response to an allergic reaction. But antihistamines can also make you drowsy and dizzy. Decongestants,

like Sudafed,

relieve nasal congestion but also have side effects, including irritability and insomnia. Finally, anti-inflammatory drugs (many in the form of steroids), like Flonase, attempt to get at the root of the problem, but again, they have limiting side effects. Henry tried a combination of drugs

for about a year and a half with moderate success. Still his seasonal allergies often left him with a red, runny nose and eyes, itchy throat and basically a swollen, pained looking face. Not an attractive look Henry says with a bit of a laugh but a serious tone. A registered nurse, Henry says there’s nothing like showing up to treat a patient while looking deathly ill! So, at his doctor’s advice, Henry opted for the third line of allergy treatment defense: allergy shots. Allergy shots contain a small amount of

whatever a person is allergic to. The idea is to build up immunity and desensitize the body from the allergen. Henry noticed a big difference with none of the side effects of his drug treatment. The only effect he experienced was a localized irritation at the needle site that could be treated topically with an antihistamine. Other than that his shots required some extra time in the doctor’s office as patients must stay under a physician’s care for about half an hour following shots in case of a bad reaction from the administered allergens. With allergy shots Henry was finally

living well, “it was wonderful, it was a new life”. He could go outside anywhere, no avoiding places that triggered his allergies. He didn’t have to deal with the drowsiness and mental fogginess from antihistamines. His body had finally built up a resistance to the allergens that relentlessly pursued him. Life was good! Just an allergy shot a month and Henry was literally off and running, marathons and more, for the next seven or eight years. At that point Henry decided to go off the shots. The hope was that he had built
