dining room with tiny tables, Ugly Fish is spacious, and could handle a number of smaller groups as well as parties as large as 25. Located at the western edge of the

Riverstone development in Coeur d’Alene, parking should never be a problem. Outside,

the whole complex sports a

designer Northwest theme that makes you look around for the nearest ski lift. Inside, it is a different story. The space is full of circles and stark modern lines, bright red chairs and stools, and a light show that bathes two walls in a blue that shifts into purple then pink and red, yellow, green, aqua and then back to blue. General Manager Yuki Collette express- es real passion for excellence. This trans- lates into service that is welcoming and warm. There were a few gaps when we were left alone too long, but to a person the staff was engaged and willing to offer guidance with what is a daunting menu. In fact, my main criticism of Ugly Fish is the menu, which is almost a coffee table book with vibrant color pictures and liter- ally hundreds of selections. It is bewilder- ingly large. It also appears to have been so expensive to produce that the staff has had to slap “Discontinued” stickers over dishes that were either not particularly popular or took too long to prepare. The stickers send the wrong message.

They imply that Ugly Fish is in trouble, when, in reality, business is building. My first impulse was to thumb through and look for everything not still served rather than focus on the fine food that is coming out of the kitchen and from the sushi bar. Yet, I’ll certainly be back – menu change

or not – for more sushi as well as cooked food and I’ll plan to wash it down with another Happy Budda beer. The bottle itself is as much of a novelty as the name- sake Ugly Fish.
