‘TO DIE FOR’ THE FACE [ BY ERIN IRELAND ]
“I am so in
love...madly in love—with food! I’m Italian!” says Rick Campanelli, the extra-friendly ET Canada co-host.
RC: Miku is a great spot. The chef behind the bar makes an amazing dynamite roll, but it’s not on the menu. He just whipped it up on the spot.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR TRASHY INDULGENCE? (I.E. THAT LATE NIGHT 7/11 OR DRIVE-THRU TREAT) A: CH: Ketchup chips. And if I find some Reese’s Pieces, I’m happy. RC: Hot dogs and hamburgers! You know—the ones at 7-Eleven that are sitting there rolling on the heaters?

I caught Rick and co-host Cheryl Hickey backstage for a quick food chat before they appeased a long lineup of fans with a final autograph signing session…
Q: WILL YOU SHOW US YOUR ‘TO DIE FOR’ FACE? (THIS IS THE EXPRESSION OCCURRING AT THE TASTE OF ‘TO DIE FOR’ FOOD—YOU KNOW THE ONE!) A: See right. Q: NAME THE FOOD YOU WOULD MOST OFTEN DESCRIBE AS ‘TO DIE FOR’. A: CH: When I was a kid my mom made the best ribs— they would cook all day and make such a beautiful smell in the kitchen. We’d all fight over the last one. RC: I loved my Nonna’s lasagna. I’ve moved onto more ‘sophisticated’ foods now, like sushi. All the places here in Vancouver are amazing.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN VANCOUVER? A: CH: I haven’t had time to go out for dinner! Coast Coal Harbour hotel room service has been fantastic. In Toronto, I love Bistro 990.

Q: IS THERE A FOOD YOU REFUSE TO EAT BECAUSE YOU WERE SICK AFTER EATING IT? A: CH: Sushi is one thing I’ve had trouble with. And liver. RC: I’ll eat anything in front of me. I even ate giblets and liver when my mom used to cook them. Who eats giblets?
Q: WHAT IS THE SEXIEST FOOD? A: CH: Spinach salad with goat cheese and a beautiful raspberry vinaigrette. RC: Sushi. Also, a plate with barely anything on it and a bottle of wine.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESSERT? A: CH: ‘Sex in a pan’. My mom makes it and it’s amaz- ing—it’s like a Skor bar but way, way better. RC: Crème brûlée from anywhere and everywhere that sells it—I’m serious. I love crème brûlée! Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COMFORT FOOD? A: CH: My mom’s stew. RC:-- Nonna’s stracciatella soup. I’m trying to learn the recipe.
