Sweet or savoury, enjoyed at breakfast, lunch or dinner—is there any food as versatile as the waffle?


OK, maybe there is, but let’s focus on these luscious latticed treats for a moment (and they’re not the kind you pop in your toaster). Here, some of the best waffle joints in the city. Don’t be surprised to have to line up outside Patisserie Lebeau


(grababetterwaffle.com), on West 2nd by Granville Island. Here, pastry chefs whip up traditional Brussels waffles (light, thick and crispy) and artisanal Liège waffles (rich, dense and chewy) for hun- gry patrons, Tuesday to Saturday. With all the different fruit-filled, chocolate-dipped, custard-stuffed, savoury and ‘sandwich’ waffles on the menu, you’ll likely waffle a bit before placing your order. Downtown on Beatty Street, you’d be hard-pressed to find a tastier waffle than at Café Medina (medinacafe.com). Plus, they’re hard to miss, stacked up by the front window like that. Crispy and sweet with a variety of $1 toppings (milk chocolate lavender, white chocolate pistachio rosewater and raspberry cara- mel, among others; yogurt or maple syrup will cost you $1.50), Medina’s waffles are legendary—and definitely worth a taste. Also downtown, this time on Davie, Miura Waffle Milk Bar


(miurawafflemilkbar.webs.com) offers—you guessed it—waffles and milk. Famous for its savoury (think BLT, Wasabi Salmon and Garlic Chicken) and sweet (try Banana Caramel, Cookies & Cream or Ti- ramisu) waffle sandwiches, Miura also specializes in cold flavoured milk (maple, strawberry or mango) and ‘yoggy’ milk (blueberry or pineapple). We can’t think of a more perfect pairing!
