Art contest deadline nears Paper exhibit closing April 22


Area artists have until April 23 to submit their work in an art contest sponsored by the Chandler Arts Commission and the Chandler Cultural Foundation and held at the Vision Gallery in downtown Chandler. Prizes for the first “Art in Focus” show include three $200 cash prizes for Best in Show, first- and second-place winners. Ten $50 honorable mentions will be awarded. Art will be displayed in May at the Vision Gallery in Chandler’s new City Hall Complex. An evening artists’ reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Fri., May 18, when winners will be announced. The artworks will be available for pick up on June 1.


Entry requirements Artworks that express a “community point of view, representing our way of life and our community” are sought in 2-D and 3-D art by youth and adult artists in watercolor, oils, acrylics, paper, photography or ceramics. All artworks must be no bigger than 16 by 20 inches on paper or canvas, or no taller than 14 inches. Artworks do not need to be framed to be submitted. Artwork will be grouped by ages: Youngsters ages 10 to 14; teens ages


15 to 17 and adults ages 18 and older. All qualifying entrants must fill out an application form to be submitted with their artwork. There is no fee to participate.

’Tis the season for Haydn


Franz Joseph Haydn’s lengthy

Led by Music Director Jack Herriman and Associate Conductor Alex Zheng, “Symphonie Fantastique” by Hector Berlioz is also on the program. Youth theatre tryouts pending


Area students ages 8 to 18 may audition for Princess Plays Theatre Camp by appointment on Sat., April 21 at Heat Wave Dance Academy at 1880 S. Alma School Rd. in Chandler. Award-winning choreographer, actress, musician and singer Karen Burns, a resident of Fox Crossing, will direct and choreograph the production.
