Neighbors Technology opens up surgical possibilities

IBS Awareness Month teaches those about ailment Blind and bedridden for four months, an elderly

patient recently regained his vision, thanks to technology to treat neurological conditions like tumors and aneurysms at Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers. Both centers, members of Dignity Health, offer

the new Zeiss OPMI Pentero 900 microscope for neurological surgeries like craniotomies, cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine procedures and skull base surgeries. The microscope allows surgeons to experience video images presented in high-definition quality, a streamlined workflow for a more efficient surgery and advances using fluorescence to provide enhanced visualization. “We have had great success with the few surgeries

we have already performed using the OPMI Pentero 900,” explains Marco Marsella, M.D., a neurosurgeon at the centers. “It is amazing to see how advances in technology can greatly improve a patient’s quality of life.”

Turn discomfort into diagnosis The symptoms are unpleasant and often

embarrassing, and few people discuss the condition with friends or loved ones — yet nearly 20% of U.S. adults have symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), making it one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders diagnosed by doctors. April is IBS Awareness Month, and Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers have gastroenterologists specializing in the field of digestive and liver disorders to help residents tackle this uncomfortable issue. IBS affects the large intestine causing cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation.

“Although symptoms may be uncomfortable, they do not cause permanent damage to the colon and can be controlled over time,” says Dr. Nelson H. Lim, M.D., a gastroenterologist and hepatologist with privileges at the two medical centers. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but food, emotional stress and hormones are just a few factors that can affect IBS symptoms, Lim says. He adds that a person with IBS may have a colon that is more sensitive and reactive than usual. “Sensitivity causes spasms after stimulation by

things such as certain foods or medications. Milk, chocolate and alcohol might cause constipation or diarrhea, while carbonated beverages and some fruits and vegetables may lead to bloating and discomfort. Stressful events can worsen or aggravate symptoms, but it does not cause them.” IBS usually begins before the age of 35 and is typically seen before the age of 50. Women and those with a family history of IBS are the most at risk for developing the syndrome. Since women are more likely to have IBS, many of them find that signs and symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual cycle.

Managing a healthy diet, lifestyle and stress can help

control IBS symptoms. Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers’ doctors work with each patient to determine the best course of treatment, which may include performing a medical screening, or a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. To find a doctor specializing in gastrointestinal

disorders, call ResourceLink at 480-728-5414 or email ResourceLink@DignityHealth.org. For more information, visit www.ChandlerRegional.org or www.MercyGilbert.org.

Simply Bread, which closed after about two years. Smeraldo is thrilled to be back in the bread business,

and to be working again with some of her former wholesale customers. “I just started selling sourdough bread again to Superstition Ranch in Mesa, and they are already going through more than 100 loaves a day.” Smeraldo says she is enjoying getting to know her

clientele, a wonderfully diverse mixture of people from the surrounding neighborhoods. She welcomes feedback and is happy to provide what her customers are looking for. “I recently started making tres leches cake, for

example, because we have a lot of Hispanic customers from nearby neighborhoods and that is one of the things they want.” Gluten-free products may be offered soon, as The

Bread Connection baker is experienced in creating them. If Smeraldo is working when customers come in for the first time, she’s likely to give them a tour of the 7,000-square-foot bakery. “I have all-new equipment that I like to show them: my

new ovens and mixers. I keep the place immaculate, and people are always very impressed.” During the tour, customers will probably also get the

chance to meet some of Smeraldo’s family, including her children, Natalie and Manlio Jr., and her sister, Eileen. “My whole family is helping me; they all help me out

so much.” The Bread Connection is at 1076 W. Chandler Blvd.,

Suite 106 in the former Cathy’s Rum Cake in Chandler. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 480-855-6775.
