IPPSC 2012

WE’RE READY TO ROLL IN RIGA W

ith a speaker programme ranging from US-based

academics to Latvian researchers, the programme for the 2012 International Potato Processing and Storage Convention should offer enough variety to accommodate all tastes and disciplines in the potato industry. The convention dates are

June 26-28, with a slight change to the tried-and-tested format. After the two days of presentations – with Tuesday, June 26,

being storage oriented and the next day being process focussed – Thursday will be used for field trips to processing facilities in the Riga area. Again the convention will also allow time for networking,

discussion forums and exhibits in the convention area. Everything kicks off on the evening of Monday, June 25, when

this magazine and its sister publication Potato Storage International, host a welcoming reception for delegates and speakers. Tuesday begins with a hot breakfast provided by the Radisson Blu Daugava – our conference hotel.

7 Breakfasts are part of the package for this convention and the

speaking programme will be preceded by coffee in the exhibition area on both Tuesday and Wednesday. These short ‘breaks’ in the exhibition area – morning coffee and

two mid-session breaks on each day – allow delegates to mingle, network and look at the table-top exhibitions on offer. After the day’s programme of presentations on the Tuesday,

there will be a conference ‘happy hour’ bar which is free for attendees. Wednesday evening sees the gala dinner, again preceded by

drinks, which will be a sit-down event and not the previously used buffet concept. Given that 2012 is a busy year for the industry, with the WPC

taking place in Edinburgh in May, IPPSC cut down to two days of talks in an attempt to make it more concise but still offering value for money. Speakers range from Professor Joe Guenthner, professor of

agricultural economics at the University of Idaho, who spoke on the need for identity protection for genetically modified potatoes at the Edinburgh convention, who will address the Zebra Chip disease to Romain Cools, secretary general of Belgapom, who will present a ‘case study’ on Belgium and the
