Guide leader honoured for 35 years of hard work
A
Croxley resident who has been in guiding since the age of ten has been awarded for her
work with a local Girl Guide group. Viv Hewett, of Frankland Road, has been a
leader of the 4th Bushey Guides for more than 35 years. On Friday, March 23, at Haberdashers’ Aske’s
Boys’ School, Viv was awarded a framed certificate by former chief guide of Girl Guiding, Liz Burnley, after being nominated by two Brownie leaders for her ongoing work.
‘I was surprised to be nominated and felt hugely honoured to
receive the award’ The mother-of-three toldMy Croxley News: ―I
was surprised to be nominated and felt hugely honoured to receive the award. ―I have been a member of the Bushey Guides
since I joined when I was ten. ―I stayed on as a young leader and trained as
an assistant guider, before I took over when I was 24 – I have never strayed too far from Bushey. ―It is very satisfying doing what I do and I
really enjoy working with the children, particularly when we go on our annual camping trip – which many of the children look forward too. ―It is great working with the girls, watching
them enjoy learning doing things they would ordinarily do at school. I think girls need some
time away from the boys, to let their hair down and be themselves and at Guides they can do this.‖ The leader added that her two daughters had
attended the guides and were also leaders, but said guiding at times can be a very big job. She added: ―I love what I do and can’t see
myself giving it up just yet. ―Even my son enjoyed helping out at the
Guides more than the Scouts when he was younger, but there is a lot involved. ―As leader I will not just attend the weekly
meetings but also organise events and care for the hut, which recently underwent a renovation. I do love it though and we are always looking for guide leaders to join. It is a wonderful group to be a part of.‖ The guide group is held at 89 Frankland Road in Croxley Green, WD3 3AS.
