Into the Day by Ron Pyatt
Into the Day
‘Landscape and Memory’ at Art at the Works is my first solo show for 3 years and I’m looking forward to it very much. I’m also a little surprised and feel rather lucky since three years ago when I had a show at Kelly College on the opening night I was in Derriford having a heart by pass operation. I had been in Derriford for a month before that having intensive chemotherapy and had arranged to come out for the opening. Then the week before I had a heart attack. From there I went down on a dark journey and many times in the intervening years I doubted whether I would ever paint again. “Are you painting yet” friends would ask me. What could I say “ I haven’t got the strength to pick up a brush” or “I feel flat and far from inspired”. But two years on I tentatively
picked up a brush and started painting. I found myself struggling with some dark images on the theme of “Towards Princetown”. They 18
were hard to resolve but finally I came out with four prints I was pleased with. See
www.ronpyatt.co.uk/new work In September 2011 Sarah and
I moved into Tavistock and converted our loft into a studio for me to work in. One of the first images I came up with was “Into the Day” which I later realised reflected what I felt in myself.
It was like a new beginning. I loved our house, living in Tavistock and wanted to paint. Since then I have been working to get this show together. Often I start my work with random marks and textures deliberately not controlling the process. I then look into it for felt experiences and memories rather like staring into the fire and making stories. When I find something I set to work drawing it out using traditional and digital media. The result can be a painting plus a number of digital images developed from the various stages the painting has gone through. The prints are archival quality giclée prints but rather than straight copies of an existing painting most of them are unique editions, originals in their own right.
Dawn Along Ancient Trackways I’m pleased with the new
work and feel very grateful for the NHS.
