by Marc Ayotte The Campbell boys’ baseball and girls’ softball teams engaged in a twin bill killing of the visiting Hopkinton Hawks on Friday, April 13. Both Cougar teams arrived at the same destination – demoralizing the opponents for the bus ride back to their homeland. The road they traveled was however, quite different. The Lady Cougars started early, put the

accelerator to the floor, and then finished early, compliments of the mercy rule. After scoring three in the first and then posting an eight spot in the second frame, CHS led 11-1 after just two innings, as Coach Gatherum’s crew cruised to a 13 hit, 13-1 division III win, nudging their season record to 2-0. On the boys’ diamond, two runs in the home half of the first gave the Cougars the early lead. After being tied by the Hawks in the visitor’s half of the sixth, Campbell jumped on the long ball highway in the bottom of the sixth, and distanced themselves from Hopkinton to the final tune of 11-2. Like their female counterparts, Coach Gorham’s guys also remain unbeaten – taking their first two games on their schedule. In the girls’ romp, a second inning saw 12 batters make their way to the plate with seven batters collecting hits, including Loren King who registered two in the one inning. King ended up the day going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Leading the Cougars offensively were Lauren King, Carrie Fernandez and Julia Marra with two hits apiece. L. King and Fernandez knocked in a pair with E. King and Marra each driving in one. The Hawks’ bats were grounded all day

long by Campbell’s Allie Nolan, as she fired an abbreviated complete game (five innings);

allowing only one hit while fanning a dozen batters. “I think she was in control the whole time” noted Coach Gatherum of Nolan’s performance in the circle. “We are working on not going so deep in the count. She did much better with that today-her control was very good,” added Gatherum.

were involved in a barn burner through five and a half innings before they exploded for nine runs in the sixth, answering Hopkinton’s Sam McManus, whose two run homer in the top of the sixth was the only hit surrendered by sophomore sensation Connor Sahlin, but did in fact knot the score at 2. First baseman Nick Freson made a quick trip to the hill to check on the Cougar ace – an inquiry that would soon be addressed. After a one out rope single to right by Christian Bourgea, catcher Cody Caron went yard giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead and proved to be the opening of the offensive floodgates. Sahlin’s confidence in his team’s ability to battle back was never tarnished; “when Cody started off by hitting that HR, I said Nick (Freson) that’s why - I know I got my team behind me.” Nick Freson and Travis Manning put back-to-back singles together and then Sahlin helped his own cause in a big way. At last check, Sahlin’s blast was still in flight, de-branching trees beyond the left field wall. “I knew I was going to get my shot so I looked for a fast ball and had my turn of taking someone deep,” recalled Sahlin as he inflicted pain on the Hawks at the plate as well as from the mound. With respect to his pitching performance, Sahlin recalled; “I feel I had good command on all my pitches and I was throwing my fastball well by not my hardest this early in the season.” Leading 7-2, the Cougars continued to pound Hawk ace, southpaw Sam Bonifant. Bourgea, who started the

with three singles and a run batted in. She also chipped in with a fine defensive play from the outfield when she threw a Bow runner out at the plate, snuffing out their fifth inning rally. Other Cougar bats aiding in the attack belonged to Erin King who had two hits with two RBI and Hannah Neild 2 for 2 with an RBI. In addition, Brittany McNulla displayed her power by going 2 for 4 with a triple and a double, while contrastingly, Paquin slapped down a couple of bunts for singles from the left side of the plate. On the 90-foot base paths, the boys had little trouble in the mercy-win over the Falcons. The Cougars scored in every frame of the five-inning/ abbreviated game. The Cougars not only pounded out 10 hits, they also received the same amount of free passes from the array of Bow pitchers. Chuck Neild came up big at the plate with two hits, including a double with four RBI. Chris Lowry was inserted into the lineup in the fourth inning and came through for Coach Jim Gorham. Lowry

rally, continued it with a bases-clearing double, driving in Jackson Musco, Zack Byers and Cade Lacroix for a 10-2 lead. Before the noise was all over, Caron returned to the plate to put more salt in Bonifant’s wound with a double that plated Bourgea for his third ‘ribby’ of the inning. After the game, Coach Gorham addressed his team; “you definitely just sent a message to everyone in this division. You should be very proud of what you did today.” Keeping his team in check, Gorham added “but there is still a lot of work to do.” In a one on one with Sahlin, the Cougar skipper said, “today you did everything we know you can do.” Assistant coach John Hartling in echoing Gorham’s sentiments and while raising his hand to eye level told the team “this week you guys set the bar, and it’s right here.” Cougars Beat up on Bow Three days later, the two teams headed north for a battle with Bow. On the softball diamond, the Cougars put their 2-0 record on the line against a Lady Falcon’s team that was also undefeated, at 3-0. As was the case in CHS girls’ basketball this past season, the Lady Cougars emerged victorious from the match up of unbeaten; the 11-4 win improves Campbell’s record to 3-0, good for second place in the D-3 standings. The baseball team completed the Cougar sweep, as they too upped their record to 3-0 on the heels of a 15-1 beat down of the Falcons. After Bow scored three times in the third, the

Lady Cougars found themselves trailing 4-2. However, Campbell responded nicely by scoring in each of the next four innings. They took the lead for good in the top of the fifth when they plated three runs and then added to the cushion with four more in the sixth. Emily Paquin received the start from Coach Laurie Gatherum and went three innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs on four Falcon hits. Allie Nolan relieved her in the fourth, pitching the remainder of the game in picking up the win. Nolan allowed just one hit and fanned six in her scoreless appearance as she improved to 2-0 on the year. Nolan helped her own cause by going 3 for 4 in the batter’s box, including a double and 2 RBI. Shannon Lavigne had an excellent game

responded to his opportunity by going 2 for 2 with a run batted in. Christian Bourgea contributed with an RBI triple and Cody Caron recorded a single and a double. Travis Manning picked up a single and scored three runs. Manning also went to 2-0 on the hill as he went four innings, allowing only three hits and the one earned run. Vinnie Bucci came into mop up the ugly win for the Cougars and pitched a perfect fifth. After Bucci’s brief but effective appearance, colorful Campbell skipper Gorham added some brevity of his own; “three up, three down with two K’s – then we headed to the bus.”
