Judges
Poetry - Donald Ball is a graduate of William and Mary and received his doctorate at the University of Florida, studying poetry under the poet Donald Justice. He has taught American literature, composition, and creative writing classes for over thirty years. Ball is currently teaching at Wake Technical Community College and recently judged for the Flyleaf Bookstore Poetry Contest in Chapel Hill. What’s more, his publications include poems in Tar River Poetry, The Crucible, and The William and Mary Review. He’s also been a fi nalist in the North Carolina State English Department’s Brenda Smart Poetry Competition. Ball most enjoys talking about writing and poems with other poets.
Short Story- Johnathon Burchett graduated from Averett University with a Bachelor’s in English. He has previously served as a managing editor for the Chanticleer News Magazine and is currently a freelance writer for several magazines and e-publications. He enjoys studying Roman history, ancient languages, and philosophy.
Art - Jana Baker has been painting for twenty-fi ve years and has a BFA in Painting from UNC-G. She paints commission pieces, and she has sold and exhibited her work from coast to coast. Currently she is represented by the Milton Studio Art Gallery in Milton, North Carolina. She works in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil, and pastel. The subjects of her work vary and range from portraiture to still-life. She is also an active member of the Danville Art League and has been the recipient of many awards for her artwork.
Photography - Bobby Carlsen is an award-winning photographic artist who specializes in designing original works of art that represent his clients with emotion and honesty. Bobby opened his Danville, VA studio in 2005, and it has quickly become the area’s premier photography studio. In addition to running his studio full-time, Bobby is a popular speaker and travels to speak to other professional photographers around the region. He is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the Virginia Professional Photographers’ Association, the Professional Photographers of North Carolina, the Professional Photographers of America, and is an area coordinator for the non-profi t organization Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. A winner of honors and awards at professional photographic competitions, Bobby has earned the distinction of Certifi ed Professional Photographer and holds the Photographic Craftsman degree from the Professional Photographers of America.
