RMI - There’s nothing fair about fuel duty

“The Chancellor’s decision to press ahead with plans to levy the deferred duty increase of 3.02 pence per litre (ppl) from 1 August this year will see pump prices for diesel at 150ppl by Easter and petrol 150-155ppl this summer. With VAT at 20%, this will result in a 4.00ppl rise in pump prices over and above increases due to crude oil prices,” said Brian Madderson, RMI petrol chair-

man.

“This is an unpopular move to force through a regressive fuel tax increase of this mag- nitude. It’s unhelpful, not just to householders but to busi- nesses. Drivers in rural areas where cars are a necessity will be particularly hard hit. “Only this week the IMF voiced fears Brent Crude could spike from the pre- sent US$124 per barrel up

to unchartered levels, above US$160 per barrel should there be a major shortage of oil from Iran. With strong demand from emerging economies, this would drive pump prices higher with ad- verse consequences for the economy. “We wrote to the chancellor

pointing out the Exchequer was already ‘benefiting by an estimated £4 billion extra fuel tax receipts since taking of- fice’. This resulted from the ongoing net duty increase of 1.76ppl, the rise from 15 to 20% VAT and the windfall gains of higher VAT on in- creasing pump prices. Just a 5.00ppl price rise nets the Exchequer another £250 mil- lion per year from VAT. “The Chancellor promised

reforms would produce fair taxation. There’s nothing fair about fuel duty.”

SHROPSHIRE DEALER WELCOMES NEW V40

Shropshire’s Volvo deal- ership has welcomed the launch of the new Volvo V40 in the light of spiralling fuel costs and. “The V40’s class- leading fuel efficiency and dynamics will give Volvo a sharp competitive edge in the race towards the future,” said Adrian Frearson, Wil- liam A. Lewis Volvo’s sales manager. “An overall fuel consump- tion reduction of 13% over the past two years puts us in the top flight of European car manufacturers when it comes to fuel-efficiency im- provements,” said Adrian. “The V40 reinforces Vol- vo’s position. The D2 diesel is the most efficient version with fuel consumption of 78.5 mpg. It features class- leading driving dynamics and a full deck of support and safety features making it an outstanding offer in its market segment.” He added the Volvo mod- el range now includes four models with emissions be- low 100 grams. This spring the Volvo C30 will join the new V40 at 94 g/km. The D2 versions of the Volvo S40 and Volvo V50 have emis- sions of 99 g/km.

> Adrian Fearson of William A. Lewis Telford move

One of the longest serving sales executives with Shrop- shire’s oldest family owned motor dealership has been promoted - in his 50th year. John Cook, who has been with William A. Lewis Renault for the last decade, has moved from their Shrewsbury dealer- ship to Telford where he has been appointed sales controller. His experience in the motor trade is probably unrivalled in Shropshire - 32 years. And he is looking to utilise his experi- ence in his new role. “As much as I am sorry to be leaving Renault Shrewsbury after all these years, in taking responsibility for Renault Telford I am looking to put some ‘Va Va Voom’ back into the dealership.

“I am ready for the challenge that Telford offers,” he added.
