EASTER - ‘Have your egg and eat it’ David Lloyd
Growing up, my brother always managed to keep his Easter egg perfectly wrapped, not just for days, or weeks, but sometimes months after Easter! One year he kept it so long it became inedible.
My egg, on the other hand,
rarely got to see the opening credits of whatever Easter day film was on TV by tea time.
I wonder who treasured their egg the most? Was it my brother who thought the egg was so good it was worth saving, or was it me because I thought the egg was so good it simply couldn’t wait?
We are all very different, even siblings, and we all treasure things in different ways. It always amazes me how different the people are that Jesus met and inspired in Scripture: prostitutes, tax collectors, fishermen, lepers, Jewish religious rulers, and Roman centurions.
Jesus appealed to those who like the straight forward Cadbury’s chocolate button Easter egg, just as much as those who get excited about Hotel Chocolat, Buzz Lightyear or Fairtrade eggs.
Since the first Easter day, the church in its diversity has sought to understand what it means to follow Christ afresh in each generation. It has sought not just to stare at the Easter message, like an Easter egg brightly packaged in its box, but to unwrap it, taste it, trust it, to sample something of its reality.
‘O taste and see that the Lord is good’ says the writer of Psalm 34.
At Easter we celebrate the mysterious claim that on the third day after Jesus’ death and burial they found that the tombstone had been rolled away, his grave clothes left and that he appeared to a number of frightened and excited people in the ensuing days. This led to a remarkable change in the course of the history of our world.
