Stridewins docksideHQ project
Ecclesiastical Insurance has appointed Stride Treglown to work on the development of its new head office. The project is for a 100,000sqft BREEAM ‘Excellent’ HQ office building on a dockside site, together with amulti- level car park. Joining themon the design team is Arup, engineering consultants, CSJ on planning and Sweett Group quantity surveyors. Stride Treglown was
chosen by Ecclesiastical following a detailed procurement process where it competed with 13 other firms. Stride Treglown stood out due to its past experience with similar projects, approach to the proposed design brief, a strong focus on sustainability and an overall good fit with Ecclesiastical’s own project team. Some of its previous projects include designs for the development of residential properties inMerchants Quay in Gloucester Docks and Sainsbury’s at Gloucester Quays. Director at Stride

for Ecclesiastical’s new building are now expected in April/May 2012. The project is due to be completed by late 2015.
Cronton Colliery finalists
The challenge to design a pioneering newvisitor destination on a former colliery has inspired creative teams across theworld to push the boundaries of landscape and architecture. Four of themost inventive schemes have been invited to the final stage for the chance to see their vision become a reality. The Land Trust’s international design competition
attracted 50 entries fromall over theworld, including innovative projects designed by teams in South Korea, Japan and Italy. The national land charity is nowone step closer to finding themost inspirational design and funding solution for a newvisitor destination and public open space at the formerCrontonColliery in Knowsley with the finalists beingHassell,Hawkins/Brown, Michael LeeArchitects and EdwardArchitecture and MatthewRiley. MatthewBradbury,Director ofOperations at the
Land Trust says: “Wewere blown away by the creativity and vision of the proposals. Each one offered a unique take on the brief, demonstrating empathy and understanding of the site based on its past and future contexts, in tunewith the vision and values of the Land Trust. It has been encouraging to see somany of the proposals seriously considering the long term sustainability of the newvisitor destination at every level – fromstrategic development andmodular schemes right down to renewable energy sources and pioneering
closed loop systems.” The eclecticmix of proposals include dynamic
combinations of art installations, nature reserves and education facilities, eco-glamping,multi-activity centres, biomass facilities, viewing towers, ecological restoration programmes,wind turbines, improved community infrastructure, abundant opportunities for community involvement and creation of newjobs to boost the local economy. Speaking on behalf of the panel of judges,Director of
Planit IE, Pete Swift explains: “The teams invited to interviewat the final stage demonstrate outstanding quality, inventiveness and flair in their responses to the brief, site and context. The challenge for those teams nowis to enhance their ideas, fine tune designs and focus on the financial sustainability of their proposals.” The finalists have been invited to go
through to the second stage of the competition,with thewinners due to be revealed on the 19th ofApril. Ahighly commended selection of entries, including the four finalists,will be displayed at the LeedsDesign and InnovationCentre, from the 2nd ofApril to the 4th ofMay.

W2 Planning secured
Derwent London has been granted planning permission by Westminster City Council to create 16 residential units and ground floor retail space totaling 21,400sqft at 96-98 Bishop’s Bridge Road, W2. This prominent site, home of the former Queens Cinema, is situated on the corner of Bishop’s Bridge Road and Queensway. The proposals, by architects Stiff + Trevillion, retain the art deco façade and will create 18,700sqft
£6.5million Derby College development
Pick Everard is leading the design and construction of a
new, £6.5million development for Derby College, providing its Broomfield Hall campus with a Learning and Support Building and new sports hall. The new development is
aiming for BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and is part of a major transformation of the
of high-quality apartments and 2,700sqft of ground floor retail space. Potential tenants of the retail unit would include art galleries and boutique retailers, building on the success of nearby Notting Hill and Westbourne Grove. The apartments will be a mix of one, two and three bedroom units ranging in size from 550sqft to 1,660sqft. A notable element of the scheme is the provision of a new public space on the opposite side of Queensway. Derwent London intends to start construction in early 2013 and completion is expected in late 2014.
