A NEWERA OF PUBLIC BUILDING DESIGN
PROJECT: BUSAN OPERA HOUSE CLIENT: BusanMetropolitan City LOCATION: Busan, South Korea PROJECT ARCHITECTS: Paul Preissner Architects COMPLETION DATE: Design competition entry 2011 / proposal only GROSS AREA: 60,000sqm (Building) COST: US$140,500,000
Designed for the Busan Opera House Competition by Chicargo based Paul Preissner Architects, this proposal relies on three main ideas - to provide a strong urban statement in a newly forming cultural district; to develop a clear visual strategy for the identity of the Opera which is simultaneously familiar and never-before seen; to create a unique building for the center of the cultural district with a contemporary architectural approach shaped to optimise active and passive energy use. This project reveals its personality through a combination of unique formal expressions of the shape of
the building, rational programmatic organisation, and a curated graphic pattern (stripes). All of this means the final form offers a total re-think on public building design and looks like nothing before it. The project cantilevers its second level five metres above the entry level, this allows for a very petite
ground level footprint that enables the public to be welcomed by the building, before even entering. This allows for a sequence from the pedestrian bridge that takes one over the creek, onto the site, then within the buildings perimeter gallery, which is sheltered from the elements by the cantilevered volume of the restaurant and convention spaces, to finally being within the major public lobby for the opera. The lobby is located within one of the glass stripes of the volume, allowing for an impressive space and acting as the counterpart to the massive opaque volumes of the theatres. The winning entry is yet to be announced, but it’s anticipated that the chosen design will break
ground in 2014.
Clad with a combination of translucent and opaque glass, the volume houses restaurant, conventions spaces and a major public lobby for the opera.
