environment A large housing project in Garden Road, Richmond has achieved Code 4 for sustainable homeswith the help from mechanical ventilation and heat pump specialists, Total Home Environment. The social, intermediate and private flats have been constructed in a 66-week programme with optimised design for cost. The project also consists of 25,000sqft of office accommodationwith an underground car park. Total Home Environment’s Genvex Combi 185 systemwas installed into each of the 77 flats to provide ventilation, heating and domestic hotwater in an all-in-one integrated


appliance. Due to the building’s excellent thermal properties no additional heating systemwas needed. The systemuses a 95 percent efficient counter-current heat exchanger togetherwith a super-efficient integratedmini exhaust air heat pump to heat domesticwater and incoming air, usingwarm air extracted fromthe property. The stylish, user-friendly controller has an LCD screen to give total control of the temperature, fan speed and operation throughout the day, using a ten-stage timer. refurbishment Great Portland Estate’s 24 Britton Street in central London has been transformed into a more attractive and sustainable property, thanks to a £3.7million refurbishment project, which included the addition of a striking new external Solar Shading solution fromLevolux. The regenerated five-storey building, which has achieved a BREEAM‘Very Good’ rating, now features an impressive new entrance pavilion, reception facility and central atrium, along with an attractive new external envelope.Working closely with Archer Architects, Levolux developed a bespoke Solar Shading solution to dramatically reduce solar heat gain and glare, whilemaximising

daylight levels. The solution comprises fixed, external tubular Louvres and fully automated, external Tensioned Roller Blinds. RECONOMY TO MANAGE NATIONAL TRUST’SWASTE


Reconomy has signed a five-year supplier framework agreementwith theNational Trust. TheWasteManagement agreement,which applies acrossNational Trust properties, includes generalwaste,mixed recyclables and glass, wash roomservices, and ad hoc hazardous waste. Tamzin Phillips,WasteAdvisor for the National Trust says: “The Trust has sites in some very remote locations and itwas important for us


to find a partnerwith the resources to service such outposts.” In 2008 Reconomy carried out a detailed feasibility study into providing nationwidewastemanagement.
