Designing out crime Stephen Lampard reveals howa new, free-to-use, virtual Toolkit could transformthewaywe think about secure residential design


Stephen Lampard is a senior partner at Re-Format LLP, an architectural and design consultancy based inHampshire.


Architecture and graphic design studio Re-Format has been enlisted by the flagship UK police initiative Secured by Design, in association with Hampshire Police, to develop a 3D virtual toolkit for planners, architects and surveyors.

developments and highlight best practice solutions. The system, which is free to use on the Secured byDesignwebsite, has been developed to allowprofessionals to explore the principles of designing-out crimewithin a 3D CAD-style housing plan.Aseries of scenarios, including the layout of communal spaces, use of lighting,mail delivery and landscape planting, highlight the design decisions thatwould


increase the risk of crime and anti- social behaviour. For each example an alternative is provided, detailing the relevant standards recommended by Secured by Design and the Police services. The requirements and recommendationswithin the Toolkit are based on verified research and have been proven to achieve a reduction in crime risk of up to 60 percent. Here, senior partner of Re-
