dronfield EYE mayor’s EYE

Meeting the Dronfield 10k winner, Richard Harris, of Rotherham Harriers (left), who crossed the line in a time of 34 minutes and 28 seconds, and runner-up Chris Adams of North Derbyshire Running Club

I

T has been a hectic time for me as Mayor - one of the busiest months of the year.

I was thrilled to be invited to start the town’s annual 10k event and also the fun run, and then help to hand out medals

afterwards. The event gets bigger each year and more people turn out to support it. Congratulations to the local Scouts and all the other volunteers who organise it. And well done to everyone who completed the course.

I also attended a meeting of the town’s Fairtrade Committee and heard about their successes and plans for the year ahead.

I represented Dronfield at the annual NE Derbyshire Civic Service which was this year held in Clay Cross. In the same week, I visited members of Drone Valley Rotary Club at Gosforth Lodge, talking to them about the role of the Mayor in Dronfield.

There was a very successful Big Time Musical staged by Henry Fanshawe School pupils at the Civic Hall. This was a most enjoyable show.

I met with Civic Society members and Rev Peter Bold to consider entries for the Building Project of the Year, then joined Town Council colleagues in competing in the annual Town Twinning Federation Quiz. We didn’t win!

I was welcomed to the new Co-operative Funeral Home, Pentland Road, to a blessing ceremony and was invited to open the smart premises.

A fund-raising event for my Charity Appeal - an Aquarius Night - was staged at Hilltop Sports & Social Club and raised more than £300. My fund was further boosted thanks to the latest coffee morning staged at the Civic Hall. Once again my role was to prepare the bacon sandwiches!

I am still looking for teams to enter a Golf Day at the local Hallowes course on Friday, April 20th. For details, call 01246 418573. To round off my fund-raising, a final charity concert is to be staged at the Civic Hall on Friday, April 27th, featuring the fabulous Past Masters - one of the most popular bands in north Derbyshire right now. They will be performing a string of classic hits from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

The evening is certain to be a sell-out and tickets, priced £10, are on sale from the Town Council office in the Civic Centre.

Coun Doug Oxspring, Mayor of Dronfield
