School’s big day out with royalty
Westminster Abbey. A
The nine children were given front row seats and watched performers from across the Commonwealth, including the musician Hugh Masekela and singer Laura Wright. Seeing Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, it was a memorable day for the Dronfield pupils, who had won tickets by entering artwork, interviewing local people and making videos of Dronfield to show how the town has changed during the Queen’s 60 year reign.
The occasion was filmed as part of a documentary about Westminster Abbey and will be shown on BBC2 later this year.

RuggerEds is going from strength to strength following its launch in May 2011 and article in Active8, commented Rugby Development Director Glyn Chandler, "we are now coaching over 300 children each week in the 3 - 9 age bracket and have contributed to Sheffield RUFC being officially named as the largest Rugby Union Club in the North of England, overtaking Harrogate, a traditional bastion of strength within the game".
Whilst participation numbers are falling in general over the county, Sheffield's numbers increase year on year.
From its humble start in May 2011 with a handful of 3 - 6 year olds, the RuggerEds Coaching team led by Dean Mabson has swelled and now employs 9 qualified Coaches and operates a number of sessions at its Abbeydale base, but also after schools clubs throughout the area including Mylnhurst, Abbey Lane, Dobcroft, Hallam, and new schools coming on board at Ecclesall and Nether Green.
As a result of participation numbers, over 30 children graduated into Sheffield RUFC U7's in Sept 2011 and this years number is expected to hit 35. However, the increased participation has its downfalls with grass space being at a premium, which has led the Directors of RuggerEds working alongside other clubs in the area.
One such collaboration is starting after Easter at Dronfield RUFC, where the RuggerEds team will deliver a new session on a Saturday morning to local children in the North East Derbyshire area. RuggerEds are also working in a number of local schools including Gorsey Brigg, St. Andrews and Lenthall to build numbers from grassroots upwards and hopefully Dronfield RUFC will see the fruits of the projects success that will run throughout the Summer with a number of graduations into its U7 set-up in September.
