Prior Park College helps its students put theoretical learning into a practical, real world context
izzie Daniels, a Prior Park College Form 4 pupil, recently won the Young Film Critic of the Year Award at a ceremony held at BAFTA
in London. She was one of four students in her age group in Great Britain to be nominated for this prestigious award. So how did she do it? Mr Nigel Tattersfield, Lizzie’s English teacher who submitted her entry commented, “Lizzie’s deep love of film and extraordinary talent as a writer combined to stunning effect in her insightful appreciation of Michelangelo Frammartino’s beautiful cinematic rendering of the Pythagorean cycle of life, which she particularly warmed to as a result of her studying Greek.” As a keen student of Latin and Greek, Lizzie understands the importance in the origin of words and their use, which underpins her study of English and strengthens her creative writing ability. An appreciation of film and film criticism allows students to engage with modern forms of visual expression, and a strong command of the English language is crucial in effectively conveying their opinions through prose. And as a talented music scholar, Lizzie has also established an awareness of other forms of artistic expression, facilitating her analysis of creative works.

The school plans to set up educational partnerships with local, national and international industries and businesses
From class to real life
There can be frustration with a traditional curriculum that leaves little room for students to apply the knowledge they’ve gained in school to real life scenarios. Schools must figure out a way to ensure their pupils are prepared for examinations that are tailored to the curriculum, while acknowledging the myriad real world learning opportunities that are equally powerful in a student’s growth. What Prior Park does expertly is guide its pupils in putting their theoretical learning into a practical
context. That is exactly what it has done for Lizzie, and with great success. Headmaster James Murphy strives
to offer the student body interesting qualifications and opportunities with plans to develop a new Prior Qualification across the foundation that will make sure all pupils contribute to the school, and later on to society. In the past, business students have taken trips to The New York Stock Exchange, two budding writers from Sixth Form have interviewed Dame Stella Rimington, and Ms Clare Ford, the school careers adviser, stays active with all year groups by conducting career workshops. The school has plans to set up educational partnerships with local, national and international industries and businesses, offering exceptional careers guidance and work-related experience. It is an educational model to aspire to. BL
