GOLF COURSES 45
Holes in the middle of your round at La Moye have been renovated; pictured above is the work to improve the bunker and green complex at hole 12. Meanwhile, work at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club was carried out
between early October and mid December 2011 to specifications and drawings again produced by the Hawtree team. Te work at Royal Wimbledon involved reconstruction of the 1st and
18th holes, a project requiring major ‘cut and fill’ earthworks to reshape and re-model the two fairways, opening up the 1st hole (previously a very narrow dog-leg right) and re-aligning the 18th to provide an improved, yet still challenging approach to the green. Included in the specification was construction of two new left-hand
fairway bunkers together with a rebuilt green and a new tees complex, all completed using existing turf wherever possible. Steve Briggs, construction director for MJ Abbott Ltd, told GBD that the
winter period had been a busy one for his teams and that they were “really pleased” with the results of the hard work. He said: “I think at both La Moye and at Royal Wimbledon we have
helped to create exciting fresh challenges for members and visitors. We worked closely with Hawtree Ltd on both projects in an October to December time-frame and we achieved our objectives on time, which is important. La Moye has really been refreshed in the three holes and players
will enjoy interesting approaches into new green complexes. “In the case of Royal Wimbledon, members will find that their first
hole may seem a little kinder off the tee, while they can look forward to an exciting challenge to finish their round on the 18th.” Steve expects shrewdly selected renovations like this will be the order
of the day for many architects and construction firms in the near future. “Clubs want to offer something fresh for their customers but budgets are very tight, which can change the approach to phase-work. For example, a club that may have been looking at renovating the course with nine holes each year for two years, may now renovate in six-hole phases over three years.” Following these two projects, members of the team attended BTME in
Harrogate, and Steve said the event was very successful for them in terms of exploring potential new contracts. “We have interesting work lined up as the summer progresses and Harrogate really helped there. Hopefully, we can help other clubs and resorts as they look to improve their golf offering in 2012. GBD
