Two gems enjoy a polish C
OMPLETED in early December 2011 and involving plenty of work on the sunny island of Jersey, the La Moye Golf Club project involved the shaping and re-contouring by MJ Abbott Ltd of the
fairways on holes 10, 11 and 12, the construction of new greens complexes on all three holes, bunker renovation on holes 10 and 11, and a new tees complex on the 11th. Secured by the company following a successful competitive tender and
client interview, the contract also included reshaping of the contours on the 9th fairway and alteration of the existing irrigation system to suit the shape and position of the new tees and greens. Te three holes singled out for improvements were originally built in the
1970’s with a clay capping to retain moisture. Tis gave these holes different agronomic and playing characteristics to the other 15 sand-based holes. Another important element of the project was the planting of dune grass
MJ Abbott Ltd has carried out innovative work recently in remodelling two famous courses, La Moye in Jersey and Royal Wimbledon in the London area.
alongside the remodelled 11th and 12th fairways using grass stripped from nearby out-of-play areas. Tis delicate work was undertaken using two excavators and one bucket. Having carefully stripped a section of turf, the bucket, complete with contents, was uncoupled from one excavator and moved by dump truck to the other, which then re-laid the dune grass in the required position. Richard Cutler, course manager, commented: “MJ Abbott Ltd have
worked on two major projects here at La Moye; a full irrigation installation in 2007/8 and a three-hole reconstruction project in 2011. On each occasion their highly skilled staff and consistently professional approach helped ensure that both projects were delivered on time, on budget and, most crucially, to our complete satisfaction.” Te design work and tender process was carried out by internationally respected architects Hawtree Ltd.
