SunDogs Auction April 20 promises to be a good time
BY JESSI GOWAN —
jgowan@prairiepost.com For the past six years, Great Plains
College has been raising money to support its athletics department through the SunDogs Auction Extravaganza fundraiser. This year’s event takes place April 20, at the Swift Current campus gym. “It has been very successful in raising funds for the SunDogs,” noted Meaghan Lawrence, development officer with Great Plains College and one of the organizers of the event. “That money keeps the program running, covering travel expenses, tournament fees, and equipment that they need. One hundred per cent of the money raised at the event goes towards the operation of the program.” Approximately $65,000 has been raised for SunDogs athletics and scholarships over the last five years, making it the most important fundraiser of the year for the
college. This year should bring in substantial funds as well, since the value of the items up for auction is high. “There are a lot of amazing prizes this year,”
Lawrence said. “They come from a variety of sources,as well.” Planning for the event
begins in the fall, lining up sponsors and deciding how to proceed. Title sponsors Stark & Marsh, Melhoff Electric, and Boston Pizza have been instrumental in making the evening a success, but the college sees generous donations from many other businesses throughout the community. Many of the businesses
donate items for the auction, but the college also sees a number of cash donations, which allow for a little more flexibility.

Auctioneer Skip Neufeld, far right, helped sell numerous items at the auction a few years back. He will be back again this year along with emcee and multi-media personality Ryan Switzer.
“When businesses offer us cash donations,
we can use that money to purchase some really unique items to include in the auction,” Lawrence admitted. “That allows us to bring in items that you just can’t find in town.” It’s not just the prizes up for auction
that bring in supporters, however. The atmosphere of the event is laid back and fun, making for a unique evening out. For a $15 ticket, patrons receive complimentary happy hour beverages, a pizza buffet, prizes, and the opportunity to shop for some amazing items. “There is a lot of value to that ticket, and
even if you don’t buy anything you can still come out and have a really great night,” said Lawrence. “For a lot of people, this is the main fundraising event that they attend every year, and they plan to come every time. It’s just a lot of fun.” Doors open for the SunDogs Auction Extravaganza at 7 p.m. on April 20, with the auction beginning at 8 p.m. For more information and a list of auction items, visit
