Barry to run in memory of fundraiser Ron
A
local charity is set to benefit from the marathon
effort of Barry Bray, who will take part in the London Marathon later this month in memory of his father-in-law and Bushey man Ron Hutton. Ron, who passed away last
November, lived in Rudolph Road, and was a tireless fundraiser for Watford Mencap, the charity which Barry will now run the 26.2 miles across London to raise money for. Ron‘s daughter and Barry‘s
sister-in-law, Monica, has lived in Watford Mencap‘s residential home, Hillside, in Pinner Road since 1974. Local parents of young
women wi th l e arning disabilities clubbed together to open the home in 1970, at a time when many people were
shut away in institutions. Barry said: ―Ron used to be
out in his car collecting milk bottle tops and for jumble sales and he used to help out with swimming at the old Watford Baths behind the Town Hall.‖ He continued: ―I lived in
Garston in the 1980s so I have fond memories of Watford. I wanted to raise money for Watford Mencap, as I know the money will get to the end user, and what I do will have a real impact. ―We really appreciate what
Watford Mencap has done for Monica over the past 38 years, and I wanted to give something back. My daughters Victoria and Rachel think I‘m a bit nutty, but they will be there cheering me on,‖ comments Barry who is training four
